Factorio Quality Guide: Tiers, Effects, Ingredients, & More
Posted on by
The Factorio Space Age expansion introduced several features to the game, one of which is quality. With it, players can build structures and craft equipment with enhanced attributes. Here, you’ll learn about quality in Factorio, its tiers, its effects, and how to create higher-quality items.
Currently, two methods exist for Factorio players to create high-quality items: (1) use specific ingredients or (2) use quality modules. Using specific materials grants higher-quality items and effects based on the quality of the ingredients used. On the other hand, the second method enables random chances for players to get higher-quality items.
Recipes for creating items have quality variations, where each item must meet a specific ingredient quality. Remember, the ingredients must have the same quality for this method to work.
Additionally, fluids do not have quality requirements, allowing the same fluid to be used in creating items of any quality. Players must also carefully select ingredient quality to prevent production issues, ensuring high-quality items don’t disrupt lower-quality production.
Quality modules increase machine quality production chance by 1%/2%/2.5% per tier. Starting a crafting machine uses the sum of module quality chances. Doing so lets the machine use RNG to randomly roll upgrade success rates.
Once the machine upgrades the item, it repeats the process. However, the chances of re-rolling upgrades are now at a constant 10% and continue until they fail.
Like the first method, players can only use items with the same quality as the input. Remember, quality modules are only required to enhance an item’s quality. Crafting an item always results in the base quality of the materials used.
Vanilla Factorio offers five quality tiers, which are the following:
