Generally, whips in Terraria are used by summoners, thanks to their supplied bonuses. But which whip should you get and use? We researched the best options, so continue reading to know what we found.

Top 5 Best Whips in Terraria

Terraria Best Whips We picked five out of the nine whips available in vanilla Terraria. The following choices are selected based on various categories, including base weapon damage and combat efficacy.

5. Spinal Tap

Spinal Tap Available in pre-Hardmode, Spinal Tap is the first green-rarity whip players can get in the game. The amount of materials needed to craft this weapon is quite many. However, its crafting ingredients are fairly easy to find in Terraria’s subterranean world. New players can start collecting these materials once they start digging through the game’s underground map.

Stats and Effects

  • 27 base weapon damage
  • 2 knockback
  • 10 velocity
  • +7 summon damage
  • A hit to an enemy will let summoned minions focus on that opponent
Tip: Pair the Spinal Tap with the Obsidian Armor set’s effects to help carry pre-Hardmode players to early- to mid-Hardmode, even with the nerf to the armor in version 1.4.1.2.

How to Get

Crafting the Spinal Tap requires players to be near a Work Bench. Then, combine the following items to make this weapon:
  • 90x Bone
  • 55x Cobweb

4. Snapthorn

Terraria Snapthorn Whip Snapthorn is another pre-Hardmode whip with a lower damage output than the Spinal Tap. However, it has the added bonus of increasing the wearer’s attack speed upon hitting an enemy. It also has a chance of poisoning enemies upon hit.

Stats and Effects

  • 18 base weapon damage
  • 1.5 knockback
  • 8 velocity
  • +6 summon damage
  • A hit to an enemy will let summoned minions focus on that opponent
  • 20% chance to inflict the Poisoned debuff on hit enemies
  • Upon hit, grants the wearer the Jungle’s Fury buff, which increases the attack speed by 12% for 3 seconds
Tip: Switching to another weapon with a similar attack-speed-boosting buff allows players to stack those bonuses.

How to Get

Crafting the Snapthorn requires players to be near Iron or Lead Anvils. Then, use the following crafting ingredients to make this item:
  • 15x Stinger
  • 3x Vine
  • 12x Jungle Spores

3. Morning Star

Terraria Morning Star Moving out of the pre-Hardmode whips in Terraria, the Morning Star is a yellow-rarity Hardmode weapon obtainable after defeating Plantera. Although it has a slow attack speed, the tradeoffs to this shortcoming are the weapon’s high base damage and knockback.

Stats and Effects

  • 165 base weapon damage
  • 11 knockback
  • 8 velocity
  • +8 summon damage
  • +12% critical hit chance for summons
  • A hit to an enemy will let summoned minions focus on that opponent
Note: The Morning Star has the highest knockback stat out of all the whips in Terraria.

How to Get

Defeat Blue Armored Bones, Hell Armored Bones, and Rusty Armored Bones at the Hardmode Dungeon for a chance to obtain a Morning Star. It has a 0.5% chance of dropping from those enemies in Classic Mode and a 1% chance in the Expert and Master modes.

2. Cool Whip

Terraria Cool Whip Players that want to add to their arsenal of summoned minions can choose the Hardmode weapon Cool Whip. Despite its low attack power, hitting an enemy with it summons a snowflake to fight for you for 3 seconds. Although the summoned snowflake isn’t affected by damage buffs, calling upon its aid is still a good way to increase DPS.

Stats and Effects

  • 45 base weapon damage
  • 1.5 knockback
  • 8 velocity
  • +6 summon damage
  • Hitting an enemy summons a friendly snowflake to fight by the player’s side
  • A hit to an enemy will let summoned minions focus on that opponent

How to Get

Crafting the Cool Whip requires players to be near Mythril or Orichalcum Anvils. Then, combine the following items to make the weapon:
  • 8x Soul of Light
  • 8x Soul of Night
  • Frost Core

1. Kaleidoscope

Terraria Kaleidoscope The Kaleidoscope is the last and highest-damaging weapon we’ll mention on this list. It has a straightforward use, meaning that it doesn’t have extra bells and whistles like the Cool Whip or the Snapthorn. Nonetheless, enemies hit with this whip are in for worlds of hurt.

Stats and Effects

  • 180 base weapon damage
  • 4 knockback
  • 12 velocity
  • +20 summon damage
  • +10% critical hit chance for summons
  • A hit to an enemy will let summoned minions focus on that opponent

How to Get

The Kaleidoscope only drops from the Empress of Light boss at 25%. Expert and Master mode players can also acquire this weapon from the same boss’ Treasure Bag. Terraria Server
