Before a clan can run massive smelting operations in Rust, it’s important to understand, and perhaps even master, the basics. The Furnace stands at the center of these procedures and can arguably be the heartbeat of any base. So, keep reading this guide to learn the different Furnace variants in Rust, their crafting costs, and smelting recipes.

How to Get a Furnace in Rust

Rust Furnace As of the Naval Update, the Furnace in Rust has three types: Standard, Electric, and Large. Each variant has its unique benefits that fit different requirements and situations.

Furnace

Rust Standard Furnace At the heart of industrial progression in Rust is the standard Furnace. This deployable object lets anyone, whether a new player or a veteran post-server wipe, refine raw materials into other essential items. Although it’s not as efficient as its electric and larger counterpart, it can be tougher than expected to progress in Rust without this must-have workstation.
  • How to Craft: Use 200x Stones, 100x Wood, and 50x Low Grade Fuel by hand
  • Repair Costs with a Hammer: 100x Low Grade Fuel, 50x Wood, and 25x Low Grade Fuel
  • Repair Costs with Garry’s Mod Tool Gun: 100x Low Grade Fuel, 50x Wood, and 25x Low Grade Fuel
  • Repair Costs with a Repair Bench: 40x Low Grade Fuel, 20x Wood, and 10x Low Grade Fuel
Smelting Recipes
  • Metal Fragments: 1x Metal Ore and 1.67x Wood
  • Sulfur: 1x Sulfur Ore and 0.83x Wood
  • High Quality Metal: 1x High Quality Metal Ore and 3.33x Wood
  • Jar of Honey: 1x Honeycomb x 0.33x Wood
  • Burnt Human Meat: 1x Cooked Human Meat and 10x Wood
  • Burnt Wolf Meat: 1x Cooked Wolf Meat and 10x Wood
  • 15x Metal Fragments: 1x Empty Can of Beans and 5x Wood
  • 10x Metal Fragments: 1x Empty Tuna Can and 5x Wood
  • 75% Charcoal: 1x Wood

Electric Furnace

Rust Electric Furnace Over time, a Rust player must prioritize cost-efficiency when smelting raw materials to avoid resource waste. The Electric Furnace aims to solve that concern by allowing players to smelt items without relying on Wood. As its name suggests, this deployable requires only a power source for smelting, making it an indispensable asset for any resource-driven operation.
  • How to Craft: Use 5x High Quality Metal and 200x Metal Fragments at a Workbench Level 2 or 3
  • Repair Costs with a Hammer: 10x High Quality Metal and 94x Metal Fragments
  • Repair Costs with Garry’s Mod Tool Gun: 10x High Quality Metal and 94x Metal Fragments
  • Repair Costs with a Repair Bench: 1x High Quality Metal and 40x Metal Fragments
Note: The Electric Furnace can be looted from various crates, containers, and scientists.
Smelting Recipes
  • Metal Fragments: 1x Metal Ore
  • Sulfur: 1x Sulfur Ore
  • High Quality Metal: 1x High Quality Metal Ore
  • Jar of Honey: 1x Honeycomb
  • Burnt Human Meat: 1x Cooked Human Meat
  • Burnt Wolf Meat: 1x Cooked Wolf Meat
  • 15x Metal Fragments: 1x Empty Can of Beans
  • 10x Metal Fragments: 1x Empty Tuna Can

Large Furnace

Rust Large Furnace Large Rust clans often require processed materials en masse. Filling that need is the Large Furnace, a massive deployable structure capable of smelting vast quantities of raw materials. Although it’s not as cost-efficient as the Electric Furnace, the primary benefit of using the Large Furnace is that it allows groups to produce more items per unit of raw material.
  • How to Craft: Use 500x Stones, 600x Wood, and 75 Low Grade Fuel at a Workbench Level 2
  • Repair Costs with a Hammer: 250x Stones, 300x Wood, and 38x Low Grade Fuel
  • Repair Costs with Garry’s Mod Tool Gun: 250x Stones, 300x Wood, and 38x Low Grade Fuel
Note: The Outpost sells a Large Furnace for 175-700x Scrap.

Furnace Usage Tips & Tricks

Rust Furnace Tips and Tricks Unlike other survival titles, Rust rewards players who think outside the box, even when using the seemingly straightforward Furnace. So, here are some tips and tricks to help you use this deployable object more strategically.
  • Deploy Electric Furnaces for small rooms. 6x Electric Furnaces can easily fit in a triangle on a half floor. Use this setup to save space without significantly sacrificing processing efficiency.
  • One large battery can power 3x Electric Furnaces using a branch. Divide the battery connection using a splitter to power all connected deployable workstations.
  • Take advantage of Memory Cells for Electric Furnace automation. Program a Memory Cell to turn off power after the workstation finishes smelting to save power.
  • Avoid using the Large Furnace as a solo player. This tall workstation can be a magnet for raiders, as it becomes an obvious landmark that tells the position of your base.
  • Use the standard Furnace to make Charcoal. Note that 1x Large Furnace can produce roughly the same yield as about 12.5x Small Furnaces. So, consider using the standard Furnace only to craft Charcoal to prevent fuel wastage.
