From humble beginnings to terrifying battles in the End, a tamed wolf is an eternal companion that will always charge ahead so long as it means saving their most important friend. So, today, we explore the Minecraft wolf, its many variants, and how to tame them for pets or battle in our Minecraft Wolf Guide.

Wolf Overview

Minecraft Tamed Wolf Sitting
  • Health: 4 Hearts (Wild) or 20 Hearts (Tamed)
  • Attack: 1.5/2/3 Hearts (Easy/Medium/Hard)
  • Behavior: Neutral or Conditionally Passive
  • Favored Food: Bone, Meat (Any), & Rabbit Stew
Added in Minecraft 1.4, wolves were Minecraft’s first tameable mob and remain to this day as the only combat companion. A tamed wolf will follow its owner unconditionally and fight any who dare damage them, including other players. Should a tamed wolf be harmed, its tail will gradually lower, indicating damage that can be healed using any meat, including rotten flesh or rabbit stew. An owner of a tamed wolf can also order their companion to sit with a right click. The wolf will then remain seated at that exact location in a passive state until the player returns and allows them to move once more. Additionally, owners can name their tamed wolf with a name tag and dye the color of their wolf’s collar by right-clicking their wolf with dye in hand.

Wolves have nine visual variants determined by spawn biome and seven personality variants, with one automatically assigned when a wolf spawns. These personalities include big, classic, cute, puglin, angry, grumpy, and sad, and alter only how the wolf sounds. Excluding spawn biome and pack size, all wolves share the exact same statistics and behavior. The choice of which to tame is entirely cosmetic.

Taming & Breeding

Puppies In Birch Forest Screenshot Despite having many favored foods, wolves can only be tamed using bones. Each bone has a one in three chance of successfully taming a wild wolf, with success being indicated by hearts. There is no limit to the number of wolves a player can have tamed, which makes breeding them all the more valuable. Feeding a full health tamed wolf meat activates love mode, indicated by a cloud of hearts. Two wolves in love mode will approach each other and cause a single puppy to spawn between them. A puppy takes 20 minutes to grow into a wolf, but it can be shortened by feeding them favored foods.

Wolf Armor

Tamed Wolf in Wolf Armor Screenshot Wolf Armor can be crafted using six armadillo scutes on a crafting table and then dyed and applied to any tamed wolf a player personally owns. Once equipped with wolf armor, tamed wolves will not take damage from most sources until the armor’s durability is completely depleted. The armor visibly develops more cracks the lower its durability falls. Wolf armor can be repaired with armadillo scute or removed entirely from a wolf with shears.
