Enchantments can lead to some of the best equipment in the game, but there are also a few that some players wish never to see. So, today, we explore the frightening curses of Minecraft in our Minecraft curse guide.

What Is a Curse in Minecraft?

Minecraft Cursed Loot Screenshot Curses are technically just an enchantment like any other, but with negative effects that can’t be removed even with a grindstone. There is no risk that a curse will appear when enchanting items on an enchanting table. However, they can appear on enchanted gear and enchanted books found throughout the world.

Curse of Vanishing

Minecraft Curse: Vanishing on Leggings Screenshot When curse of vanishing is present on an item, it will vanish upon death rather than dropping. Players using the game rule “keepInventory on” will retain the item as normal, however. As for players in hardcore, the curse is irrelevant, as one death ends the world anyway. While it may not be so “fun” of a fact, curse of vanishing is compatible with every enchantable item in the game, allowing it to be seen just about anywhere. Curse of vanishing can appear on looted enchanted gear and enchanted books from fishing, raids, trading with a librarian, overworld structure loot chests, and trial chamber vaults. Compatible Items:
  • Helmet (All Variants)
  • Chestplate (All Variants)
  • Leggings (All Variants)
  • Boots (All Variants)
  • Sword
  • Mace
  • Trident
  • Shield
  • Bow
  • Crossbow
  • Pickaxe
  • Shovel
  • Axe
  • Hoe
  • Shears
  • Fishing Rod (Including Carrot and Fungus on a Stick Variants)
  • Brush
  • Elytra
  • Carved Pumpkin
  • Mob Heads
  • Compass (Bedrock Edition Only)
  • Recovery Compass (Bedrock Edition Only)

Curse of Binding

Minecraft Curse of Binding Screenshot When curse of binding is present on an item, it can not be removed once equipped unless the item breaks, the player wearing it dies and drops it, or creative mode is entered. This means that if an item that can’t fully break, such as an elytra, has curse of binding on it, any player with the game rule “keepInventory” active or in hardcore mode will never be able to remove it through vanilla means. A prank to play with curse is enchanting carved pumpkins with curse of binding and having them shoot out at players from dispensers as they will automatically equip to any player hit who is not wearing a helmet. Curse of vanishing can appear on looted enchanted gear and enchanted books from fishing, raids, trading with a librarian, overworld structure loot chests, and trial chamber vaults. Compatible Items:
  • Helmet (All Variants)
  • Chestplate (All Variants)
  • Leggings (All Variants)
  • Boots (All Variants)
  • Elytra
  • Carved Pumpkin
  • Mob Heads
