Has Minecraft 2 Been Announced?

No, but also yes. Mojang has not announced any planned sequels for their global hit, Minecraft. However, that did not stop the original creator of the game, Notch, from announcing his intention to create Minecraft’s spiritual successor on X. So, while it could never be “Minecraft 2” in any official sense, it would technically be a Minecraft sequel in some capacity.

What Would “Minecraft 2” Include?

The announcement was only recently made, but Notch’s various replies and tweets suggest it would be quite similar to the original but with fresh lore and ideas. Some fans suggested mixing the Minecraft formula with the rogue-like dungeon crawler he is currently working on, but it seemed Notch was against the idea and had some designs already in mind. Sadly, all else can only be left up to speculation unless Notch himself shares otherwise.

The Legality

Notch can not legally make Minecraft 2 and made sure to clarify he in no way intends to break the contracts and deals he has signed. As such, the new blocky game, if it will be blocky at all, would be under a different name. Notch did state that he would be open to working with Microsoft on this spiritual successor if certain terms were agreed upon.

The Wait Begins

While little is known, it is hard for many long-time Minecraft fans not to get excited. After all, it was Notch who created the game that somehow went on to change millions upon millions of lives.
