The winds of change are blowing across the pirate-infested waters of Windrose, as Ashlands has been teased to be the game’s first major update. Although its release isn’t set in stone yet, the journey to these new lands is paved with new information.

Windrose Ashlands: Possible Release Date

According to a recent Kraken Express devblog, the developer has yet to announce an official release date for the Windrose Ashlands update. At the time of writing, this major patch is still in its early stages of development. As such, players may not expect this new biome, along with other new content, features, and improvements, to be released anytime soon. Nonetheless, some pirate captains may speculate that Ashlands will launch at the end of Q4 2026 or early Q1 2027.

What’s Coming in the Windrose Ashlands Update?

Story Expansion

Windrose was envisioned as a survival-adventure title with a strong narrative focus. With the upcoming release of Ashlands, the main story and side quests should grow exponentially in scope. Players continue their hunt for the Obols, with the next fragment hidden among the ruins of a long-forgotten Spanish colony. Pirates should always watch their backs, as they’re not the only ones searching for this precious item. New factions enter the fray, each with its own ambitions and schemes. So, carve your way through new enemy territories and continue your journey across the procedurally-generated seas.

Ashlands: The New Biome

Arguably, the headline of this upcoming major update is the new Ashlands biome. As Windrose’s fourth major region, this volcanic area promises a significantly different experience from the Coastal Jungle, Foothills, and Cursed Swamps. Here, players can expect new islands, enemies, items, resources, and more! Additionally, a powerful, challenging new boss should be waiting at the end of this biome’s main questline. Remember, always prepare yourself as you unravel pirate booty in this location, showered in volcanic ash.

Base Building Expansion

Aside from the new biome, the creative side of Windrose is also getting an extra heaping of love. In their devblog, Kraken Express mentions that they were “stunned by the number of amazingly creative builds” players showcased. So, the devs respond by adding many new decorations, expansions to existing building sets, and various quality-of-life (QoL) improvements. Additionally, the Ashlands update should also expand upon the well-received camp NPC system. Players should also expect over 40 new building pieces and more than 50 fixes and QoL changes before the Ashlands arrive.

Ship Overhaul & Additions

Ship gameplay is also getting major attention. Kraken Express also acknowledges that naval combat has “a lot of room for expansion.” So, expect at least one new ship class to arrive with the release of Ashlands. Additionally, more ship classes are already in the works, which include the Brigantine, Fluyt, and Galleon. Enemy ship AI is also getting an overhaul to make NPC vessels behave more naturally and sail in formations. Wind mechanics will also soon be added to the game, but the devs want to make the system “fun and simple” to maintain Windrose’s focus on adventure. Finally, sing to your heart’s content as more sea shanties should arrive with Ashlands.

Visual Updates

The devs also confirmed that the Buccaneer faction is getting a costume refresh. Other factions and their default visuals will follow suit at a later date. New character sets are also in concept development, ensuring that your pirate’s swagger expands as the world grows.
