Just like Minecraft, Hytale is filled with fuzzy, feathery, and scaly critters scattered around Orbis. Also, like Minecraft, some of the wildlife is friendly, and some of it wants to use you as its next meal. Luckily, there are a few ways to interact with the friendly ones, so you can try to tame them for your base. Here, we cover how to tame animals in Hytale (as best we can right now), and look ahead to the introduction of new mechanics in this area.

How to Tame Animals in Hytale

Hytale Capture Box screenshot Unlike Minecraft, Hytale is currently in early access. This means that not all of the game's features are ready yet. Sadly, this means that animal taming isn't quite finished. However, there are still two little tricks you can use to keep more docile animals from running away.

Hytale Feed Bag

First, you can craft a Feed Bag. These handy little pouches will keep a select few of the friendlier members of the ecosystem from running away when you get close. Specifically, PigletsChicks, and Rabbits. To craft a Feed Bag, you need to make a Farmer's Workbench. Here's everything you need for those two items:
  • Farmer's Workbench
    • Any Tree Trunk: 6
    • Any Stone: 3
  • Feed Bag
    • Wheat: 10
    • Any Vegetable: 5
    • Any Fruit: 5
    • Essence of Life: 10
All of these items are fairly easy to find when starting in Hytale. You might need to wander a bit to locate some wheat, but you can often find heaps of it near old, dilapidated cabins. Additionally, Essence of Life might sound rare, but it occasionally drops when you harvest plants.

Hytale Capture Crate

The Feed Bag might not seem like it has loads of utility at this point, but it's better when combined with a Capture Crate. If you want to bring animals from one place to another in Hytale, the Capture Crate is your best friend. It can scoop up baby animals with a single click and place them back down with another. You can even put baby Cows or Horses in it! If you're trying to catch a squirrely Chick, Piglet, or Rabbit, you can lure it in close with a Feed Bag. Then, quickly swap to your Capture Crate and nab it. The Capture Crate also works on animals that aren't livestock, like Squirrels. However, it doesn't seem to work on flying birds. If you want to start a farm, using a Capture Crate to transport baby animals to your base and into an enclosure is your best bet. Here's what you need to craft a Capture Crate at a Farmer's Workbench:
  • Farmer's Workbench Level 2
    • Softwood Trunks: 5
    • Wheat: 5
    • Lettuce: 5
    • Essence of Life: 50
  • Capture Crate
    • Any Wood: 4
    • Essence of Life: 50
