What is the Oldest Active Minecraft Server?
Posted on by
Over the years, many servers have come and gone, yet four stand above as ancients that continue ever moving on. So, today, we answer, “What is the Oldest Active Minecraft Server?” and some may be surprised to hear it is not 2B2T.
The oldest active Minecraft server is nerd.nu, which was created during Minecraft’s first multiplayer test in June 2009. It remains to this day as a creative server that has since expanded to offer both a survival and a snapshot server as well. The community is relatively small, but active and tight-knit. Sadly, its original maps have been lost to time, however.
minecraft.novylen.net is the second oldest Minecraft server, going live on August 4, 2010, with the official release of survival multiplayer. However, some argue that it should be considered older due to one very unique fact. Novylen runs on a map that pre-dates the release of multiplayer, making the server the proud owner of the oldest continuously used multiplayer survival map still available for exploration and play today.
Those looking to experience the visual history of a small-knit Minecraft community across multiple versions will find few servers better. That, and some fun survival.
Tied with Novylen for age is MinecraftOnline, which was also created on the official release of Minecraft’s survival multiplayer, August 4, 2010. However, unlike Novylen, which remained small and relatively unknown until recent years, MinecraftOnline has and continues to be a staple of the Minecraft community, with over 300,000 players having left their mark on the never-resetting Freedonia survival map.
The community remains large and strong to this very day and has even been recognized by Guinness World Records. If joining, be prepared to journey through a server where the eras of Minecraft are truly visible like nowhere else.
Finally, we have the third-oldest and most famous Minecraft server, 2builders2tools or 2B2T. This anarchy server was created in December of 2010 and has had the same map for the entirety of its existence. However, its history is the furthest thing from preserved. There are no rules on 2B2T, and nothing is sacred. To escape its destroyed spawn and the hackers that roam it is a feat in and of itself.
Yet, players still venture hours and hours from spawn to create some of Minecraft’s greatest survival builds, knowing full well they could be gone in an instant. Over one thousand players are often online at a time, and no other server has as much lore, legends, and mysteries as this one.
