From minigames to unintentional weapons, sulfur cubes are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most versatile mobs Minecraft has to offer. And now, they can even be used to create flying boats for traveling as fast as elytra! So, today, we explain, step by step, how to fly with sulfur cubes alongside the items one needs to achieve light speed.

Before anyone can begin flying, some sulfur cubes must be found and captured! Sulfur cubes are exclusive to the sulfur caves biome, which generates underground. However, those searching for sulfur caves will instead have the best luck quickly traversing the surface of the overworld while keeping an eye out for sulfur springs. These small, volcano-shaped structures of sulfur blocks indicate that a sulfur cave has generated below. After mining down to the biome, a sulfur cube can be captured with an empty bucket, creating a bucket of sulfur cube.

Required Resources

  • Bucket of Sulfur Cube
  • Pig
  • Saddle
  • Log (Any)
  • Chest Boat
  • Lead
  • Splash Potion of Slow Falling
  • Spear (Netherite)
Flying with sulfur cubes requires each of the items listed above. While weaker versions of the spear can be used, the netherite spear’s longer uptime on its charge ability helped make this hard-to-pull-off trick a bit more consistent. Otherwise, the most expensive resource was the splash potion of slow falling, as one was needed for each flight. Splash potions of slow falling can be brewed in a brewing stand using a bottle of water, netherwart, phantom membrane, redstone, and gunpowder in that exact order.

How to Fly With Sulfur Cubes

Minecraft Sulfur Cube Flying Setup With all the required items in hand and a saddled pig, head to a high launch point. Anything from a mountain to the top of a tree works. The reason this is necessary is because the boat can’t go up, so the Y level it launches from will be where it ideally stays. Once at your desired launch point, the steps below can be followed for a successful departure.
  1. Place the sulfur cube.
  2. Put a log block in the sulfur cube.
  3. Place a chest boat.
  4. Put the saddled pig in the chest boat.
  5. Use the lead to attach the slime to the boat.
  6. Throw a splash potion of slow falling at the ground, ensuring the sulfur cube, boat, and pig are all hit.
  7. Sit on the pig.
  8. Attack the slime to launch the boat.
    • If it does not work, try reattaching the lead. A successfully attached boat moves when the slime is pushed.
  9. Use the spear’s charge ability (hold right click) to continuously hit the slime in the direction you would like to travel.
  10. Repeat step 9 until arrival. Doing so maintains travel speed and height.
Under perfect circumstances, the flight should last as long as the slow falling potion, but reality is often far from the case, especially in survival. Flying with sulfur cubes can be very finicky and hard to get right. Survival’s lower reach also makes it hard to maintain height at all. But it is nonetheless something fun to try, even if it won’t be contending with elytra anytime soon.
