The Terraria Update 1.4.5 introduced various new world seeds to the game, one of which is Skyblock. Like the Minecraft Mod of the same name, Terraria players begin on a lonely floating island where resources seem scarce. Here, let your creativity rise to ensure proper progression, which would eventually lead you to the Moon Lord. So, let us help you dive deep into Skyblock in Terraria through this guide.

Terraria Skyblock Progression Guide

Terraria Skyblock First, create a new Skyblock world seed in Terraria by creating a new world. Then click the seed icon and select Skyblock as the seed type. Next, load into the game, and see that you’re now on a lonely floating island. Note: Skyblock in Terraria can be a challenging experience for solo players. Consider playing it in a dedicated Terraria server with friends to reduce the grind.

Starting Out

Arguably, the first thing you’ll notice is the severe lack of the color green on the floating island. In particular, grass and trees are absent, and there are only clouds, dirt, the Guide NPC, and one Solidifier. However, slimes will spawn from the left and right. So, prepare for some light combat. Thankfully, the slimes drop gels, which can be used to make blocks. Collect these resources and create a home for the Guide. Continue defeating the slimes and farming gels for blocks. Alternatively, wait for grass and trees to grow on the island, which should take a few in-game days. Then, cut the trees for wood to use in various crafting recipes. Eventually, you’ll be able to have enough blocks to create a makeshift bridge and move to the next floating island.

The Search for Shimmer

If you thought the Shimmer is valuable in Vanilla Terraria, it’s even more important in Skyblock. So, continue creating a makeshift bridge until you can reach one with this iridescent pool. For instance, you can throw Wood into Shimmer to transform it into a Dirt Block. Since Wood is a renewable resource in Skyblock, and Dirt Block isn’t, you should have near infinite amounts of timber with the help of Shimmer. Note that this journey may take a while. However, the reward of finding Shimmer is priceless.

Craft a Furnace

A Furnace in Terraria can be crafted at the Work Bench using 20x Any Stone, 4x Any Wood, and 3x Torch. However, Stone materials are scarce in Skyblock. So, use ropes and create a platform beneath the island. Then, proceed to create a path to the underground layer and eventually into the cavern layer. Once you’re in the cavern layer, wait for Cavern Slimes to spawn. Defeat these enemies, as they drop Stone upon defeat. After farming enough Stone, return to your base and craft the Furnace. With the structure placed, interact with it to transform Iron Ore into an Iron Bar. Then, farm Iron Bars to unlock the Anvil, along with higher-tier weapons and tools.

Make Water

Another element required for proper progression in Skyblock is water. Two methods exist to help bring water into your floating island. First, place a bucket into the world when it rains. Eventually, it’ll transform into a water bucket, which you can use to fill a basin. Alternatively, travel to the hell layer and trap a lava slime before killing it. Doing so should let it drop lava, which you can take to the Shimmer and transform into a honey bucket. Throw the honey bucket into Shimmer, which then turns into a water bucket. Remember, you need a steady water supply in Terraria for various reasons, especially in Skyblock. For instance, a small lake on your island lets you fish. You can also throw lava into water to transform it into Obsidian.

Defeat the Eye of Cthulhu

The Eye of Cthulhu is an early-game boss that can randomly spawn at night. It’s not a challenging fight. However, pay attention to your footing, as one slip can mean certain death in Skyblock. Defeat this boss and receive two items required for progression: the Demon Altar and World Evil Seeds.

The World Evils

Use the World Evil Seeds to create biomes based on your chosen corruption. Remember, you must build the evil biome from dirt and the seeds you acquired. Doing so should spawn mushrooms that’ll help you in creating the summoning items for either the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu boss. Summon the boss and defeat it, rewarding you with Dungeon brick and walls.

Travel to the Dungeon

In the Terraria version of Skyblock, the Dungeon always spawns at the opposite side of Shimmer Island. So, create another makeshift bridge to the opposite side of the world seed, leading you to the Dungeon. Here, defeat the “Old Man,” as he transforms into Skeletron. The boss’s AI is the same as in Vanilla Terraria, so don’t expect anything new here. It also drops the same items, with the addition of the Hellforge. With Skeletron defeated, you’re free to set up the Dungeon in Skyblock. Continue creating the domain and descend to its depths. Find and defeat a Voodoo Demon to get a Voodoo Doll. Next, kill a lava slime, which should spawn a pool of lava.

Defeat the Wall of Flesh

Assuming that you’re prepared for what’s to come, throw the Voodoo Doll into lava to summon the last boss of pre-Hardmode – the Wall of Flesh. It’s also ideal to create a sufficiently high platform before the fight starts, as the Wall of Flesh may spawn higher than intended. Like Skeletron, the AI used for this battle isn’t different from its Vanilla variant. Defeat it, and enter Hardmode.

Welcome to Hardmode Skyblock

With Hardmode unlocked, travel to the Cavern layer to defeat more slimes. This time, these enemies drop Hardmode ores. Use these materials to craft the summoning items for the three mechanical bosses: The Twins, The Destroyer, and Skeletron Prime. Note that each mechanical boss has unique summoning conditions, which you can find below:
  • The Twins: Use the Mechanical Eye (craft using 3x Lens, 5x Any Iron Bar, and 6x Soul of Light at the Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil) anytime from 7:30 PM to 4:30 AM.
  • The Destroyer: Use the Mechanical Worm (craft using 3x Rotten Chunk, 5x Any Iron Bar, and 6x Soul of Night at the Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil) anytime from 7:30 PM to 4:30 AM.
  • Skeletron Prime: Use the Mechanical Skull (craft using 30x Bone, 5x Any Iron Bar, 3x Soul of Night, and 3x Soul of Light at the Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil) anytime from 7:30 PM to 4:30 AM.
Defeat these bosses to reveal an on-screen message saying, “The Jungle grows restless,” signifying that Plantera has spawned.

Defeat Plantera & Golem

Assuming that you’ve built an underground Jungle at this point, go there to find Plantera. If not, create the biome and wait for the boss’s bud to spawn. Defeating this essential Hardmode boss drops an Altar, Lihzahd Walls, and Lihzahd Bricks, which are all the required materials to build the Temple. Proceed to develop the structure and wait for Lihzahrds to spawn. Defeat these creatures until you get Power Cells. Next, use the Power Cells on the Altar to summon Golem. Fight and defeat Golem to spawn the Lunatic Cultist.

The Terraria Skyblock Endgame

Return to the Dungeon to find the Lunatic Cultist. Fight him, which should spawn the Celestial Pillars. In Skyblock, these structures appear underneath your makeshift bridge. Destroy them as normal, which should force the Moon Lord to appear. Thankfully, the AI used for the final boss is the same as in Vanilla Terraria, eliminating surprises during the fight. Defeat the Moon Lord, and give yourself a pat on the back, as you’ve beaten Skyblock in Terraria.
