The Ashlands are one of the most dangerous biomes in Valheim. With volcanic terrain, powerful enemies, and valuable late-game resources, it's a location you'll eventually want to explore. How to Find the Ashlands in Valheim

The Ashlands are located along the southern edge of the Valheim world. Unlike many biomes, their position is consistent across world seeds, making them relatively easy to identify once you're sailing in the right direction.

The hardest part of reaching the Ashlands is traversing the waters that surround them. The sea there is boiling hot, so you'll need a Drakkar to safely sail through it. You can unlock everything you need to craft a Drakkar after progressing through the Mistlands and defeating The Queen.

Once you have the proper ship prepared, sail south until the landscape begins to change. Eventually, you'll see volcanic rocks, ash, lava, and the unmistakable red glow of the Ashlands. In addition to the heated waves, Bonemaw Serpents patrol the surrounding waters. Try to find a safe landing area and establish a portal back to your home base as soon as possible.

Key Points of Interest in the Ashlands

The Ashlands are filled with dangerous locations containing valuable loot and progression items. Here are some of the most important POIs to look for.

Charred Fortresses

Charred Fortresses are enormous stone structures scattered throughout the Ashlands. Their large size and green light beams make them relatively easy to spot from a distance. But other than the heated atmosphere, don't expect a warm welcome.

Charred Warriors, Marksmen, Warlocks, and other enemies defend these fortresses. You'll also need to deal with the fortress walls themselves, which are designed to withstand ordinary attacks. Inside, you can find valuable resources, gemstones, and Bell Fragments.

Bell Fragments are particularly important because you'll need nine Bell Fragments to craft the three Bells required to summon the Ashalnds boss known as Fader.

Putrid Holes

Putrid Holes are underground dungeons found throughout the Ashlands. These locations are packed with enemies and can contain valuable materials, including Molten Cores. Morgen can also be found inside Putrid Holes. These nasty bug-looking beasts are pesky and aggressive, so make sure you only head into Putrid Holes if you're prepared.

You'll want to bring plenty of food, healing items, and a weapon suited for close-quarters combat. If you have a way to deal lightning damage, that's even better since Morgen are weaker to lightning attacks.

Charred Ruins

Charred Ruins are scattered across the biome and can provide useful materials and shelter while exploring. These spots can hold a variety of Ashlands resources, including Fiddleheads, Smoke Puffs, and Grausten.

Fader's Coliseum

Somewhere in the Ashlands is a massive, coliseum-like structure containing Fader's summoning altar. Its location is randomly spawned in each new Valheim world, so you will have to do some exploring to find it. If you're having trouble, you can look for a Vegvisir in a Charred Fortress, which spawns 50% of the time, or a rare spawn in Charred Ruins. This will reveal the coliseum on your map.

Naturally, the coliseum itself is the home of the Ashlands boss Fader. Only head here if you're prepared for one of the game's toughest boss battles.

All Resources Found in the Ashlands

Ashwood

Ashwood comes from the scorched trees found throughout the biome. It's used for a variety of Ashlands building pieces, furniture, and crafting recipes.

Grausten

Grausten is the primary stone-building material of the Ashlands. You can gather it from volcanic rock formations and use it to construct sturdier-looking bases, walls, floors, arches, and defensive structures.

Flametal Ore

Flametal Ore is one of the most important resources in the Ashlands. You can find it in deposits throughout the biome, and you use it to craft powerful late-game equipment.

Mining Flametal requires a pickaxe that's tier 3 or higher, starting with Black Metal. Flametal deposits are located on Leviathans in lava, which you can trigger to sink by mining which will take away all remaining ore.  So take your time when mining it, and always have an escape route!

Sulfur

Sulfur can be found throughout the Ashlands and is used in several crafting recipes.

Molten Core

Molten Cores are valuable crafting materials primarily found through Ashlands exploration, including Putrid Holes and Charred Fortresses.

Charred Bone

Charred Bone is obtained from Charred enemies and is used in Ashlands crafting.

Bell Fragment

Bell Fragments are found in Charred Fortresses by destroying the Bell Atar in the central tower. Collect nine of them to craft the three Bells required to summon Fader.

Gemstones

The Ashlands introduce three important gemstones:

These gemstones can be combined with Flametal weapons to create magical variants with different elemental effects.

The Ashlands may be covered in fire and ash, but there are still several useful plants and ingredients to gather.

Fiddlehead

Fiddleheads grow throughout the Ashlands and are used in several food recipes.

Smoke Puff

Smoke Puffs are another useful plant found in the biome. They're used in food recipes and can also help with Asksvin taming.

Vineberry Cluster

Vineberries can be found growing around Ashlands structures. Their seeds can also be planted, allowing you to create a renewable supply back at your base.

The Ashlands are home to some of Valheim's most dangerous enemies. Many encounters can also happen simultaneously, so don't let your guard down while exploring.

Asksvin

Head into the Ashlands, and you'll encounter large reptilian creatures called Asksvin. As one of the Ashlands' many dangerous foes, they can be a challenge to kill, so taming them is the best course of action. Once you've raised one, you can use it as a mount with an Asksvin Saddle. With an Asksvin mount, you'll have a much easier time traveling throughout the land.

Charred

The Charred make up a large portion of the Ashlands' enemy population. There are several variants, including:

• Charred Warrior
• Charred Marksman
• Charred Twitcher
• Charred Warlock

Warriors specialize in melee combat, Marksmen attack from range, and Warlocks use magic. Fighting multiple variants at once can quickly become overwhelming.

Morgen

Morgen are enormous undead insect-like beasts capable of dealing heavy damage. You can see them out in the open world or more commonly in Putrid Holes.

Fallen Valkyrie

Fallen Valkyries are flying enemies that can swoop down on unsuspecting players. Their mobility makes them particularly dangerous during fights against other enemies.

Volture

Voltures are flying predators that can attack from above. They're especially troublesome when you're already fighting something else.

Bonemaw Serpent

Bonemaws inhabit the waters around the Ashlands and pose a serious threat to ships traveling to and from the biome.

Lava Blob

These high-heat globs are located around the biome's volcanic areas. Any time you're near lava, you can find these pesky creatures making things tougher.

Skugg

You can find these ranged enemies around Ashlands structures.

Ash Crow & Magmafish

Not every Ashlands creature is hostile. Ash Crows are harmless and pallid crows that simply exist for aesthetics. Meanwhile, Magmafish inhabit the area's boiling waters. Catch these with some Hot Fishing Bait, and you'll have a tasty morsel and another step closer to creating a Fishing Hat.

Valheim Ashlands Building & Base Tips

Building a base in the Ashlands requires more planning than in most other biomes. The first major concern is fire. Cinders can damage structures, and wooden pieces can catch fire. This makes an exposed wooden base highly inadvisable for a permanent settlement.

Instead, consider using Grausten for the main structure and placing a Shield Generator over important areas. This should keep pesky and wandering flames at bay.

The Ashlands also grants you access to a Stone Portal. This allows you to create portals using stone rather than wood, so your method of interplanar traversal won't catch fire, and they also allow you to transport metals and other items that typically can't be sent through portals.

Once you've finished fireproofing, follow standard Valheim base-building procedure. Try to build on relatively flat ground away from lava. Keep portals, crafting stations, storage, and beds protected behind strong walls.

It's also worth creating smaller outposts throughout the biome. Having several portal locations can save a considerable amount of time when returning from distant Charred Fortresses.
