Among the many biomes in Minecraft, few are as visually distinctive as badlands. However, due to their more barren nature, their secrets are often left undiscovered. So, today, we explore the Minecraft 1.21 badlands biome alongside the mobs and resources found within.A Summary of Badlands Biomes
The Badlands biome was added in Minecraft 1.7.2 under the name mesa biome before later being changed to badlands in Minecraft 1.13. While many forms of badlands have been added and modified over the years, the three variants that can be found today are Badlands, wooded Badlands, and Eroded badlands.
No matter which is discovered, they will share a stunning display of orange sand and towering mountains or spikes of layered multi-colored terracotta. Additionally, those exploring badlands will notice mineshafts can spawn on the surface, and gold generates far more frequently at higher levels, making them one of the best sources of gold in the game.

Badlands biomes are not an easy place to call home, but some hardy mobs still make do! In all three variants of badlands, armadillos will spawn in groups of one to two and make up a significant portion of the passive mobs. Bats will also appear in all three badlands variants in groups of eight!
However, should one be lucky enough to find wooded badlands, a third mob joins the fray! Striped wolves make their home in wooded badlands, spawning in packs of four to eight alongside bats and armadillos. Those searching for wooded badlands can identify them by the inclusion of grass and trees, as it is the only variant with either.
As for Bedrock Edition players, all of the above remains true but with the added bonus of eroded badlands including sheep, chickens, pigs, and cows alongside the bats and armadillos. Those searching for eroded badlands can identify them by their resemblance to an orange desert with towering spires of layered multi-colored terracotta.
How to Find Badlands Biomes
The Badlands biome typically generates next to deserts, but players can also find them bordering biomes of warmer climates such as savannas, jungles, forests, and plains. While not impossible, Badlands biomes are very unlikely to be next to ocean biomes, even if they are of the warmer variety.
This makes traveling inland while sticking to the warmer biomes mentioned above the best way to find a badlands biome. However, for those who may be having bad luck, there is always the option of using the “/locate” command. This nifty tool provides the exact coordinates of the nearest structure or biome, and by clicking them, teleports the player there.
Some would consider this cheating, but in Minecraft, that is for you to decide. The full command is as follows:
- /locate biome Minecraft:badlands
