Filled with an otherworldly glow and hidden deep beneath the snow are caves where all but lava freezes and few survive the cold. Today, we explore the Ice Caves Minecraft biome, where one can find them, and what monsters await those who venture inside.

What Are Ice Caves?

Announced during Minecraft Live September 2026 and arriving in Minecraft 26.4, Ice Caves are an underground biome in the Overworld that generates exclusively beneath snowy biomes such as Snowy Plains. Within, players can find wide and open spaces surrounded by walls of packed ice, calcite, and stone, with pillars of packed ice and stone acting as supports throughout it. Across the ground, sparse patches of snow are also present alongside the biome-exclusive block ice crystals, which provide natural illumination. However, one should not tread through carelessly or become too distracted by its shimmering beauty. Icicles generate naturally along the ceiling of the cavern, and light from torches can quickly cause them to fall and deal immense damage to any unfortunate enough to be beneath.

Ice, Snow, & Calcite

Making up the bulk of the cavern’s structure are the non-exclusive blocks. These include packed ice, snow, and calcite, all available through alternative biomes. Water within Ice Caves does not freeze naturally unless exposed to the sky, but standard ice can still be found. Despite snowy weather not occurring within Ice Caves, the ground is covered in sparse patches of snow as part of its generation.

Ice Crystal

The first of the two exclusive blocks are Ice Crystals, which generate along the ground. They glow with a light level currently estimated to be three, providing natural faint light throughout the cavern. Despite only generating on the ground, players can place them on any surface they like after gathering them with a pickaxe.

Icicle

The second of the two exclusive blocks are icicles, which generate along the ceiling. In the dark, they are visually akin to an icy version of stalactites. However, should they come into contact with light, they very quickly melt and fall, dealing damage to those below. After gathering them with a pickaxe, icicles can be placed on the ground or ceiling as desired.

The Frozen Zombie & Stray

Alongside the standard array of mobs found within caves (Creepers, Endermen, Skeletons, Slimes, Spiders, Witches, Zombies, and Zombie Villagers), Ice Caves are home to the Frozen Zombie and Stray. Both are significantly stronger ice variants of their regular zombie and skeleton cousins that come complete with unique abilities.

The Stray

• Health: 10 Hearts
• Base Damage: 1-2/1.5-2.5/2-4 Hearts (Easy/Normal/Hard)
• Spawn Biomes: Snowy Biomes, Ice Caves
• Possible Loot: Bone, Arrow, Arrow of Slowness

Spawning in Trial Chambers, snowy biomes, and Ice Caves, the Stray has ten hearts of health and shoots a slowness arrow once every two seconds. If hit by a Stray’s arrow, base damage is delt and thirty seconds of the Slowness status effect is applied.

The Frozen Zombie

• Ice Ball Damage: Unknown/Unknown/Unknown Hearts (Easy/Normal/Hard)
• Spawn Biomes: Snowy Biomes, Ice Caves
• Possible Loot: Rotten Flesh, Ice Ball (If Holding)

While it is confirmed that the Frozen Zombie will spawn in snowy biomes and Ice Caves, most of the specific numbers regarding their mechanics are still unknown. If hit by a Frozen Zombie’s melee attack, damage is dealt, and the freezing status effect is applied. Should a Frozen Zombie spawn holding an Ice Ball, they can throw it as a ranged attack, allowing them to deal damage from afar as well.
