Some axes in Valheim are better at chopping wood, and some are better at rending flesh. All axes have a stat for Chop and Slash, with the former being an indicator of tree-chopping and the latter for attacking enemies. Normal axes are one-handed weapons, berserkir axes are pairs of smaller axes that you wield one in each hand, and battleaxes are massive two-handed tools. Naturally, each has a different attack pattern. A normal axe primary attack is a three-step chain of swings, with the last hit dealing double damage. Their secondary attack is an overhead swing. Berserkir axes use a four-step chain of slashes that actually hit six times. Meanwhile, their secondary attack causes you to leap forward with both axes swinging. Finally, greataxes have a three-step chain of swings, with double damage on the final blow. The secondary attack involves sweeping the area around you.
