Fishing is not the first thing that comes to mind when players think of Minecraft, but don’t let that be a reason to underestimate it! This nifty feature can bring home quite a bit of loot and enough food to never have to farm again. Not to mention an enchanted book or two! Today we will be exploring down by the lake-side in this Minecraft 1.18 fishing guide.

Crafting A Fishing Rod

Before we can begin our fishing trip, a fishing rod must first be crafted. And no, jumping into the water and punching the fish does not count! To make your very own fishing rod all that is needed is three sticks and two string. The sticks are placed across the crafting table diagonally, and the two string are placed in the right-most square of the middle and bottom row.

With the items placed, create the fishing rod and proudly give your first cast a go!

Minecraft 1.18 Fishing Guide

Fishing in Minecraft is straightforward, right-click when the bobber gets pulled underwater, so why have a guide? There are actually quite a few tiny details many do not know! An example being the length of time to catch a fish. It takes between five and thirty seconds before a fish will swim up to the lure and bite, but many things affect that waiting period.

First is the source of water. If it is not below an open-source of sun or moonlight, that five to thirty seconds is doubled. This means cave fishing is not viable, sadly. The second is always fishing during the rain. That previously mentioned five to thirty seconds is reduced by about twenty percent simply because of the stormy weather.

The other part about fishing many do not know of is treasure fishing. Every fish you catch has a 5% chance to be a very rare piece of loot from the list below.

• Enchanted Bow
• Enchanted Book
• Name Tag
• Enchanted Fishing Rod
• Nautilus Shell
• Saddle

Enchanted books are usually the main “lure” of treasure fishing, but using a grinder to remove enchantments, those enchanted fishing rods and bows become a great source of experience points. However, this is all under the assumption a regular fishing rod is being used. To be the ultimate angler, one more step is needed, and that is enchanting your fishing rod.

Empowering A Fishing Rod

Enchanting is an instrumental part of Minecraft, and on the off chance it is an unfamiliar subject, we have a guide on Enchanting that can be found here. This brings us to the question of why you should enchant your fishing rod in the first place, which is answered by reading the benefits!

Lure: Increases the rate of something biting the player’s hook while fishing.

Luck of the Sea: Increases luck while fishing.

Unbreaking: Lower’s the rate at which durability falls.

Lure can be level I, II, or III. Each rank of lure removes five seconds from the previously mentioned five to thirty second wait. This means at level III the wait will be five to fifteen seconds, but don’t forget about the weather! That five to fifteen seconds will be further reduced by about 20% in the rain.

Luck of the Sea can be level I, II, or III. Each rank of Luck of the Sea increases the catch rate of treasure while also reducing the chance of getting junk. This means at level III you have an 11.3% chance of getting treasure every cast.

Unbreaking can be level I, II, or III. Unlike the other two enchantments, this one does not directly affect fishing. It instead makes your fishing rod last a lot longer, which saves experience points in repairs.

Finally, with the power of these enchantments combined, you will have a fishing rod with Lure III, Luck of the Sea III, and Unbreaking III. In practice, this means that you should be reeling in a catch that has an 11.3% chance to be treasure every five to fifteen seconds. And that’s not even covering all the fish!

The Angler’s Diet

Amongst all that treasure, there is going to be a mountain of fish in your inventory. Raw cod, raw salmon, tropical fish, and pufferfish being the four possible types as of 1.18.

Raw cod acts mainly as a cookable food source, but they can also be fed to cats, dolphins, wolves [Bedrock Only], and traded to villagers. Make sure to keep an eye on any dolphins you feed since they will do their best to lead you to a nearby chest as thanks! Raw salmon is mechanically the same as raw cod and offers the same benefits.

Depending on your version of Minecraft, tropical fish or clownfish do not offer many uses as of 1.18. They can be eaten raw, traded to villagers, or fed to wolves if using bedrock edition. On the other hand, pufferfish are the main ingredient of water-breathing potions. A must-have for any underwater builds or taking on an ocean monument! Pufferfish can otherwise be eaten, but doing so will cause poison, nausea, and hunger status effects. Wolves can oddly eat pufferfish in bedrock edition without being hurt, however.
