No good viking survives long if they don't learn how to harvest the earth and use its metals. If you're aiming to prove yourself to Odin, you need to learn how to build a Smelter in Valheim. With a Smelter, you can forge weapons, tools, building materials, and much more as you continue to survive the harsh, Nordic world.

How to Build a Smelter in Valheim

Smelter screenshot in Valheim Before you can start erecting your new Smelter, you need to find its recipe. All you have to do is acquire a Surtling Core, and the recipe is yours. Surtling Cores are black and red glowing cubes. They are found in Burial Chambers within the Black Forest or dropped by Surtlings. Surtlings are a formidable enemy that live near hostile environments, such as swamps. If you're starting and want an easier time getting a Smelter, simply scour Burial Chambers until you've found a Surtling Core inside. You won't want to stop at one Surtling Core either. You'll need a few of them to create your Smelter. Here are the materials required to build and place a Smelter:
  • Surtling Core: x5
  • Stone: x20
Luckily, stone couldn't be easier to gather. Simply gather stones you see on the ground as you explore. Before placing your Smelter, remember that enemies will attack your base in raids. Smelters are valuable, so take care to place it somewhere safe and fortified. To power a Smelter, you'll need Coal. One piece of coal will power the Smelter for 15 seconds. Since a single bar of metal requires 30 seconds to cook in the Smelter, you'll need a substantial amount of Coal. This can be dropped by Surtlings, found in chests, or created by throwing WoodCore Wood, or Fine Wood into a Charcoal Kiln.

Smelter Uses in Valheim

Mining tin in Valheim As one could guess, a Smelter helps you to melt down and refine ore into usable metals. There are six different types of scrap and ore in Valheim. Here is a list of each and what they turn into after smelting
  • Copper Ore Copper
  • Tin Ore  Tin
  • Iron Ore  Iron
  • Scrap Iron Iron
  • Copper Scrap Copper
  • Silver Ore  Silver
Each ore makes its home in different biomes across the world. Copper is found in the Black Forest, Tin is near sources of water, also in the Black Forest, and Iron is often near Sunken Crypts or Muddy Scrap Piles in Swamps. Finally, Silver can be found in the Mountains. You can gather nearly all ore with any pickaxe. Silver, however, is a different story. You must have an iron pickaxe to harvest Silver Ore.
