Geysers are one of the most unique natural features Minecraft has to offer, but how to make them isn’t directly explained. So, today, we explore everything there is to know about geysers alongside how to make a geyser in Minecraft in our Minecraft geyser guide.

Where to Find Geysers in Minecraft

The Minecraft geyser is a natural formation found in sulfur caves biomes and sulfur springs. Sulfur caves can generate beneath any biome, excluding oceans and tall mountains, and contain yellow sulfur, red cinnabar, and pools of gas-emitting water that occasionally have geysers. Sulfur springs, on the other hand, are found across the surface of the overworld, usually consist of a single pool with a geyser, and indicate a sulfur caves biome is somewhere below. To obtain the items necessary to make a geyser in Minecraft, a sulfur caves biome or sulfur spring must first be found. Nine sulfur blocks can be crafted into a single potent sulfur.

Types of Geysers in Minecraft

Magma Block Geyser

  • Magma Block
  • Potent Sulfur Block
  • Bucket of Water x 4
Magma block geysers are made using a magma block, a potent sulfur block, and up to four buckets of water. All natural geysers found throughout the overworld are magma block geysers and contain these blocks. Magma block geysers erupt randomly and only for a short burst, just like those that were generated naturally.

Lava Geyser

  • Bucket of Lava x 1
  • Potent Sulfur Block
  • Bucket of Water x 4
Lava geysers are made using a bucket of lava, a potent sulfur block, and up to four buckets of water. Unlike magma geysers, they do not generate naturally and are in a permanent state of eruption.

How to Make a Geyser in Minecraft

Minecraft Magma and Lava Geyser Types Screenshot Regardless of the type, Minecraft geysers have four levels of eruption strength determined by the amount of water used in its construction. Below, four levels of geysers can be seen. Level one is a minimal-strength geyser, and level four is a maximum-strength geyser. The blocks surrounding the geyser have no effect on its functionality.

Level 1 (Minimum)

  1. Dig three blocks down.
  2. Place the magma block or lava at the bottom.
  3. Place the potent sulfur block on top of the magma block or lava.
  4. Fill the last block of the hole with water.

Level 2

  1. Dig four blocks down.
  2. Place the magma block or lava at the bottom.
  3. Place the potent sulfur block on top of the magma block or lava.
  4. Fill the remaining two blocks of the hole with water source blocks.

Level 3

  1. Dig five blocks down.
  2. Place the magma block or lava at the bottom.
  3. Place the potent sulfur block on top of the magma block or lava.
  4. Fill the remaining three blocks of the hole with water source blocks.

Level 4 (Maximum)

  1. Dig six blocks down.
  2. Place the magma block or lava at the bottom.
  3. Place the potent sulfur block on top of the magma block or lava.
  4. Fill the remaining four blocks of the hole with water source blocks.
Any amount of water beyond four blocks will prevent the geyser from functioning.
