A house without furniture can hardly be called a home, but thankfully Minecraft has more than a few options to ensure yours is as cozy as can be. So, today, we explore all the furniture vanilla Minecraft has to offer alongside some furniture build hacks in our Minecraft furniture guide.

Mojang’s Stance on Minecraft Furniture

Minecraft Custom Furniture Screenshot Despite the many blocks added over the years, few among them are traditional furniture such as tables, couches, and chairs. This is an intentional design choice. Mojang has long held the stance that adding such blocks stifles the creativity of players, so any furniture that is added usually comes with some sort of mechanical purpose for it being there. Some view this stance as having gradually changed with the addition of shelves and cushions, but we will just have to wait and see.

All Vanilla Minecraft Furniture

Beds

Minecraft Bed
  • Recipe: Planks x3 & Wool x3
Compatible with every type of dye, beds are one of the most versatile features Minecraft has to offer! They can be slept in to skip the night, used as a new spawn point, and landed on to break a fall. However, their most powerful use has nothing to do with sleeping at all. Minecraft beds explode in the Nether and End if a player attempts to use them, serving as cheap TNT for netherite mining and a weapon for easily killing the Ender Dragon.

Straw Beds

  • Recipe: Hay Bale x 3
Straw beds are a trimmed version of beds that allow players to skip the night without resetting previously established spawn points. If used in the Nether or End, straw beds are destroyed but cause no explosion. Their main purpose is for use while traveling.

Cushions

Blue Cushion
  • Recipe: Wool Slabs x3
Cushions are compatible with every type of dye and offer the very first form of functional seating for furniture in Minecraft. When right-clicked, cushions are “mounted” in the same fashion as a saddled pig or horse. You can look around, interact with nearby blocks, and even take damage, but it is not possible to move until the SHIFT key is used to get up.

Shelves

Minecraft Shelf
  • Recipe: Stripped Log x6
Available with textures for every wood set, an unpowered shelf block can store three items, with one stack of storage space for each. Right-clicking an open spot on the shelf places or withdraws a single item. If powered by redstone, multiple connected shelves store and distribute entire saved hotbar loadouts, allowing players to swap their hotbar with the click of a button. Powered or unpowered, all stored items are visibly displayed, much like with an item frame.

Lectern

Minecraft Lectern
  • Recipe: Wood Slab x4, Bookshelf x1
Lecterns can visibly hold a single book for players to interact with, but even they come with a few hidden features. When a book is placed upon a lectern, it produces a redstone signal, allowing it to act as the power source for redstone contraptions such as hidden doors. Lecterns also serve the vital role of being a librarian villager’s job block, arguably one of the most important types of villagers in the game.

Custom Furniture

Chairs

Minecraft Custom Chair Screenshot While they may lack the ability to actually sit on them, stairs and half slabs have long since served as Minecraft’s chairs. Some players expand upon this by adding signs on either side to form armrests, while others go even further by adding doors to the back for a backrest. In more recent years, plank half slabs with shelves as the armrests and trap doors or doors as the backrests have become popular too. Already we are seeing players apply these creative ideas to cushions to make them chairs as well.

Tables

Minecraft Custom Table Screenshot The addition of scaffolding did wonders for not only building but interior decorating! One scaffolding with carpet or an item frame on top results in a near-perfect-looking table. Those using item frames can even have an item appear as though it is laying on top.

Dressers

Minecraft Custom Dresser Screenshot Similar to the idea of chairs, placing three or two plank blocks with shelf blocks along the front and trap doors on either side creates a dresser with plenty of space for items like candles to sit on top. Sadly, nothing can actually be stored in it, but having an armor stand next to it can provide the implication.

Shelves

Custom Shelves Screenshot By creatively combining trap doors of various kinds, functional shelving for individual blocks can be made. Blocks that do not take up an entire cube often look best on it, such as oxidized copper golems and dragon heads.

Sinks, Bathtubs, & Water Basins

Custom Sink and Bath Screenshot Finally, we have sinks, bathtubs, and water basins created with waterlogged stairs. To waterlog a block, simply shift-right-click it with a bucket of water after being placed. Any space that would otherwise contain air now contains water, which, when placed against a wall or combined with other stairs, creates the illusions of blocks meant to store water.

What we covered here today only scratches the surface of what Minecraft’s many creative minds have come up with over the years. For more ideas like those showcased, we recommend the subreddits Minecraft Furniture and Detail Craft. YouTube is also a great source, offering many “build hack” compilations like the one above. As more is discovered, the more detailed every future build can become.
