The Gammeltroll is a creature unique to the Deep North, a biome introduced in Valheim 1.0. In particular, search for this NPC in open snowy regions and around points of interest. Gammeltrolls are also tough to miss, thanks to their enormous size.

How to Defeat a Gammeltroll

Although the Gammeltroll is classified as a normal mob, preparation is still important when dealing with it in Valheim. For starters, it boasts a higher health pool than the average creature, and it’s also resistant to various forms of physical damage. One hit from the Gammeltroll may also quickly eliminate unprepared Vikings. One of its most dangerous abilities involves launching massive objects at players at a distance. So, don’t be complacent when you think you’re far from its melee attacks. Focus on stamina management above all else when fighting the Gammeltroll. Remain mobile and dodge the heavy attacks. Also, watch out for the terrain, as getting trapped between a rock and a hard place (literally) can be a quick way to return to your saved spawn point.

Mining Gameltroll for Petrified Tissue

Once slain, the Gameltroll becomes petrified instead of bursting into a puff of pink smoke, unlike most creatures in Valheim. However, this state poses a challenge for some players, as it requires an indirect approach to getting its loot: the Petrified Tissue. To harvest its rewards, players must use Ember Charges on the statue’s lower sections, as standard pickaxes won’t work. You can craft Ember Charges using 2x Seal Pelt and 1x Embers at a Workbench. Then, take the Petrified Tissue to a Blast Furnace to refine it into Bloodgold, a crucial endgame resource. You can then use Bloodgold, along with other ingredients, to craft late-game items, including those with Frostfire and Thunderblood in their names, making it a very valuable resource for the endgame!
