The holidays are here once again, which means the little ones are home too. As hectic as it may be, what better time is there to spend together? Today we will be exploring five family fun ways to enjoy Minecraft. Or, at the very least, a few ways to keep them entertained!

Hypixel

The first on our list requires no purchase outside of a Minecraft account, joining the famous server known as Hypixel.

Together or against one another, your family will be able to enjoy a wide range of minigames beloved by all ages. To cover each one would need an entire blog of its own, but from paintball to racing, it is pretty hard to go wrong. Our personal recommendation is a minigame called Bedwars. The goal is to simply break your opponent's bed, but it's not as easy as it sounds!

Most children know of this server, and sharing the experience with their parents may very well be an experience they won't soon forget. Prepare for most of the laughing to be at your expense, however.

A Family Server

Unlike a public server such as Hypixel, private Minecraft servers give parents complete control over the experience. This is generally the safest option and is especially recommended for those with younger children. For example, server tools such as whitelist ensures no stranger can join and ruin a day's fun.

Together your family will be able to enjoy Minecraft in a shared world. One where you can explore, build, and battle until the sun comes up the next day. Sometimes quite literally if you lose track of time as quickly as I do! Further yet, a private server can be enhanced through plugins. MCMMO is a very popular example which adds levels to the everyday tasks of Minecraft.

Private servers can be created for free through home hosting, but we recommend paid hosting options for ease of use and performance. Paid hosting is offered here at BisectHosting and many other places around the web.

Adventure Maps

Together as a family, you will be able to explore countless user-created worlds, each offering a different hand-crafted experience. And with a range of jump puzzles to spooky stories told with your family as the main characters, there is truly no end in this virtual sea of options.

Modpacks

Similar to adventure maps, modpacks change up how Minecraft is played. However, what makes Modpacks very different is that they overhaul the game itself. Blocks, mobs, and dimensions all being examples of features a modpack can add.

Together as a family, explore planets across the stars or build a civilization that will stand the test of time. Themes for modpacks are many. Sometimes too many! Pirates, deep earth explorers, post-apocalyptic, fantasy, and so much more.

A Minecraft Holiday

The final item on our list may not change the game like a modpack or be as advanced as a Hypixel minigame, but it is often the most special.

Together as a family, try setting aside some time for holiday fun on your private server. For example, this past Halloween, my family attended a haunted house and maze created by my little sister. It was almost as fun as trick-or-treating!

For those who happen to celebrate Christmas, it is not uncommon for children to love decorating the Christmas tree. So why not make a giant one in Minecraft! Covering it in blocks as ornaments and lining its trunk with shulker boxes creates a second post-Christmas gift opening. One that can be quite funny when custom item names are involved.

Be it for Christmas or another holiday, the extra chance to celebrate with family will always be my favorite way to enjoy Minecraft. Especially when it can include those living far away.
