After a long silence, the Hytale team speaks out once again! This time sharing a peek at the technical side of things with a system called ECS or entity component system. Join us as we learn more about the exciting future ahead in our coverage of Hytale News 2024!

Understanding ECS

Hytale Logo ECS, or entity component system, is a sophisticated concept that stands out from traditional Object-Oriented Programming (OOP.) Traditional game development often relies on OOP, which structures game logic into objects and subclasses. In contrast, entity-component architectures, like those used in popular engines such as Unreal and Unity, break down game elements into entities (like players or NPCs) and components (data and functionality attached to entities). ECS takes this a step further by decoupling functionality from data, allowing for systems that process entities with specific components. This results in highly efficient data handling, leveraging CPU architecture and parallelization to boost performance.

New Engine, New Framework

Hytale News 2024: Kweebec Art With the Hytale engine moving to C++, the opportunity arose to take the previously detailed ECS system even further with Flecs. So, what does this mean for Hytale? It reduces the burden on the Hytale team as Flecs is battle-tested, frequently updated, and stable while also making development more intuitive and flexible. As an example, one of the most exciting applications of Flecs in Hytale is the enhancement of NPC behavior through the Combat Action Evaluator. This framework allows NPCs to make smarter decisions based on configurable inputs. Additionally, the redesigned ECS patterns and parallelized queries result in lightning-fast processing times, enabling NPCs to react more swiftly and naturally to their surroundings.
