Just because you're fighting for survival in the dangerous realm of Valheim doesn't mean you can't relax with a bit of farming. Of course, the best farming is the kind that will make you even deadlier. In Valheim, farming flax is a great way to get some handy materials that you'll need for creating high-level weaponry and armor. So, with our flax farming guide, we'll tell you how to grow plenty of the crop, how to use it in crafting, and more.

Valheim Flax Farming Guide: How to Grow Flax

Valheim Flax Farm screenshot Before you can become a flax-farming mogul, you need to find some in the wild. Specifically, the Plains biome. You can recognize this area due to a lack of trees, some rolling hills, and a bit more of a yellowish hue to the grass than in the similarly treeless Meadows biome. Once you find a Plains biome, you'll wander around until you happen to find some flax. It can be found nearly anywhere in this biome, but it is easier to find in clumps near old abandoned dwellings. You can even find a few stacks of flax in chests on occasion. You don't need a special tool to harvest flax. You can walk up to it, interact with it, and grab yourself two pieces of flax for each plant. Now with flax in your inventory, you can grow some of your own. Keep in mind, however, flax only grows in the plains biome. If you want to make a flax farm, you'll need to set it up in the Plains. When you're setting up your farm, you'll want to make sure you do the following:
  • Place walls around the farm to keep out Deathsquitos and Fulings
  • Place workbenches and/or campfires around the area to prevent enemies from spawning inside the base.
To actually plant the flax, you'll need to first till the earth with a Cultivator. Then, all you need to do is plant your flax into the tiles you've tilled. Make sure, however, that you give each flax plant enough room to grow. If they're too close, they won't get anywhere. After two to three in-game days (approximately 66 to 85 real-world minutes), you'll have fully-grown flax! You can tell it's mature when it's a nice yellow color. Harvest it by interacting with it, and, again, you'll have two pieces of flax. Keep one and plant the other to keep your crops going.

All Flax Uses in Valheim

Valheim Spinning Wheel screenshot There are a few uses for Flax in Valheim. First, you can combine it with barley to craft rugs of Straw. Straw is a purely aesthetic item, but it's perfect for any Viking trying to give their home or barn a more rustic look. Secondly, you can use Flax for taming a Lox. These lumbering beasts will only become tame if you feed them their favorite foods, and the only foods they like are cloudberries, barley, or flax. Finally, the most important use for flax is using it at a Spinning Wheel to turn it into Linen Thread. This is the all-important resource for crafting some powerful gear. Black Metal axes, battleaxes, atgeirs, knives, and swords all require Linen Thread. Armor sets such as the Eitr-weave, Padded, and Vilebone all require it as well. Luckily, a single piece of Flax will turn into a single Linen Thread at a Spinning Wheel. You'll likely still need lots of thread to make the tools you're after, but it won't require enormous amounts of flax to make a single usable thread. You can unlock the Spinning Wheel after you've killed the boss Moder. This will unlock access to the Artisan Table, which will, in turn, allow you to craft a Spinning Wheel with the following resources:
  • Finewood: 20
  • Iron Nails: 10
  • Leather Scraps: 5
