Set sail into the unforgiving seas with the right know-how. This Windrose Beginner’s Guide breaks down the necessary info you need to help you fight, build, and survive as a true pirate. Whether you’re parrying powerful bosses or building your first base, consider the following a crash course manual to thriving on the high seas.

Windrose Beginner’s Guide

Windrose Beginner's Guide Let this Windrose Beginner’s Guide be your primer to the game’s various features and mechanics. Here, you’ll learn essential information about combat, building, and more.

Combat Mechanics in Windrose

Windrose Beginner's Combat Tips Windrose is a combat-heavy title, and beginners stepping into this world must understand its combat systems. If not, you’ll be seeing Davy Jones sooner rather than later. You’ll find a basic introduction to each essential combat mechanic in Windrose to help prepare for your pirate journey ahead.
Block, Perfect Block, and Dodge
A good defense leads to an even better offense, especially in Windrose. For starters, blocking is the fundamental defense mechanic used by holding the right mouse button (by default). Getting hit while blocking with your weapon reduces damage taken, but also reduces poise (i.e., the shield icons on top of the hotbar). You’ll stagger and enter a vulnerable state when your poise meter reaches zero. On the other hand, there’s the Perfect Block mechanic. Use it by right-clicking at the precise moment an enemy strike lands. If done correctly, you’ll receive zero damage from the hit and your poise meter won’t diminish. However, it’s a precision tool, and mistimed attempts can either result in a normal block or receiving the full brunt of your opponent’s attack. If blocking isn’t the answer, dodging offers a clean escape. Start the evasive action by holding the direction you want to escape and pressing Left CTRL (by default) to dodge. Doing so performs a directional roll at the cost of some stamina. If done correctly, dodging lets you evade all attacks, even the unblockable ones, as long as you have the stamina to do so.
Ranged Combat
The pirate era graces captains with pistols, muskets, and blunderbusses to use for ranged combat in Windrose. These guns scale with different stats, particularly Precision and Agility. Unlike similar titles, the firearms in Windrose have smaller magazine capacities than those in other games set in more modern periods. So, the game’s Souls-inspired combat demands deliberate aim, timed reloads, and careful management. In most combat scenarios, guns in Windrose are treated as tactical tools rather than primary offensive armaments. Consider using a sidearm only when necessary, and prioritize using your melee weapon of choice for optimal damage output.
Stamina Management
Pirate captains can’t run, dodge, block, or swing swords forever in Windrose. The gauge that appears upon doing certain actions isn’t a simple sprint meter, as it’s akin to a currency of your survival. Windrose beginners start a new character with an agonizingly small stamina gauge. Over time, allocating points to Endurance, using consumables, and using certain talents can help increase the Stamina gauge and promote better energy management.
Healing
Arguably, the most important gauge to watch out for in Windrose is your health bar. Enemies, ranging from crabs to powerful biome bosses, can remove a chunk of health with each attack. Failure to pay close attention to this life meter can inevitably lead to your character singing with the fishes. Thankfully, healing options exist, albeit each has its own advantages and shortcomings. For instance, Bandages are easy-to-craft consumable items that restore some health but require your character to be in an arm-wrapping animation for a few seconds, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. On the other hand, healing potions can instantly restore health, but the materials needed to craft a batch require some resource-gathering runs.
Food Buffs
Hunger and starvation won’t kill you in Windrose. Your character can be hungry indefinitely, and you can still go about your daily business without seeing a single health point lost. Nonetheless, consuming food is still absolutely vital in Windrose, as it's the only way to raise your character’s base health pool, apart from allocating stat points to Vitality. Without active meal buffs, your pirate captain becomes so fragile that even an angry Dodo becomes a lethal threat. So, ensure that you’re well-satiated, as eating common food items grants a temporary maximum health boost for 7 minutes. Consuming higher-tier food items grants more health and provides stat bonuses. Epic rarity food items even offer +20 stat bonuses that persist for 30 real-time minutes. That means taking the time to stock up on the best foods available to you is a big step in progression, and you'll be thankful you did anytime you reach combat!

Building Mechanics in Windrose

Windrose Beginner's Building Tips Your pirate adventure wouldn’t be complete without a place to call home. As such, building promotes creative freedom while allowing players to rest, manage resources, and even chat with online crewmates when playing on a Windrose dedicated server. All Windrose players can enter build mode by pressing “B” (by default). Then, right-click to open a catalog of buildable structures. Click on the piece to build, and, if you have the necessary materials, place it on your base. Pressing “Q” lets you fine-tune the structure’s placement, while pressing “V” raises or lowers the camera angle. It’s also important to mention that there’s no default feature to relocate placed objects. Instead, press the middle mouse button to dismantle or destroy the piece. Doing so gives you a full refund of the materials used to craft the structure. Then, relocate it to your preferred location.
The Bonfire
Each base built in Windrose starts with the Bonfire. Crafting it only requires 5x Wood, and placing it projects a circular “build zone” that also acts as your respawn anchor (if you haven’t registered a Bedroll, yet). Here, crafting stations, storage containers, and all other building materials must be placed within this range. Entering this area also grants pirates and their allies the Rested buff.
Upgrading Workstations
As opposed to consuming materials to upgrade workstations, you must build specific structures to upgrade them. For example, placing a Sawhorse (crafted using 20x Wood and 10x Copper Ingot) upgrades the Workbench from Level 1 to Level 2. Doing so also unlocks higher-tier recipes, providing essential items for survival when moving between biomes.
Comfort System & The Rested Buff
Apart from unleashing your inner pirate architect, building a base in Windrose also means taking advantage of comfort levels and the Rested buff. Comfort grants the player the Rested buff, enhancing natural Stamina regeneration. Adding furniture and decorations to the base increases comfort levels by specific amounts. At Level 1, this buff lasts for 7 minutes and adds 1 minute per level increase. That means a Level 15 Rested buff lasts for 21 minutes.

Stats & Talents in Windrose

Windrose Beginner's Stats Tips Raw courage will only take you so far in Windrose. Mastering proper character progression by learning and allocating the right stats and talents transforms an ordinary buccaneer into a force to be reckoned with. Thankfully, building a character’s skills and talents doesn’t have costs in Windrose. In other words, you can respec stats and talent points without spending a single Piastre.
The Six Core Stats
Each player in Windrose can allocate points into six main stats, which are the following:
  • Strength: Increases damage output of heavy, blunt-force weapons like Clubs and Halberds.
  • Agility: Increases damage output of weapons with swift, sweeping attacks like Sabers, Greatswords, and Blunderbusses.
  • Precision: Increases damage output of finesse-focused weapons like Rapiers, Pistols, and Muskets.
  • Mastery: Increases critical hit chance by 0.5% per allocated point.
  • Vitality: Increases the maximum health by 13 per allocated point.
  • Endurance: Increases the maximum stamina by 5 per allocated point. It also increases the damage output of some two-handed weapons.
Selecting your preferred weapons can dictate your ideal character build. Then, focus on allocating points on the stats that matter to your chosen build. Doing so can help optimize your overall offensive and defensive capabilities.
The Four Talent Trees
Think of the six main stats to be your character’s core elements, while the talent trees dictate how you navigate combat. In Windrose, players can allocate talent points in different skills under four trees, which are the following:
  • Fencer: Talents that focus on one-handed speed and precision, particularly for Sabers and Rapiers.
  • Crusher: Talents that focus on powerful, heavy weapons, particularly for Clubs, Halberds, and Greatswords.
  • Marksman: Talents that focus on ranged combat, particularly for Pistols, Muskets, and Blunderbusses.
  • Toughguy: Talents that focus on defense and universal survivability.
The passive skills gained from allocating points into specific talents unlock powerful, playstyle-defining buffs. For instance, adding points to Marathon Runner grants a significant stamina boost. On the other hand, allocate talent points to Too Angry to Die cheats death on a cooldown.

Inventory Management & Expansion in Windrose

Windrose Inventory Management Each new character made in Windrose starts with a scant 16 inventory slots. Minutes of scavenging resources lead to frequent return trips to camp. Opening your inventory will show an available slot for a bag or backpack. Equip the right accessory to increase inventory space by up to eight additional slots. Check out our Windrose Backpack Guide for detailed information on how to increase inventory space.
