It’s been a little over a year since Valheim took over the gaming world with a massive launch for the innovative indie title. In that time, Valheim has evolved with new content and plenty of improvements along the way.

One of the latest new additions to Valheim includes Frost Caves - a new challenge for players that are brave enough. With that, here’s everything you need to know about Valheim Frost Caves, what they hold, and how to survive them.

Where to Find Frost Caves in Valheim

Players can only encounter Frost Caves in the Mountain biome of Valheim. That means players must have defeated the first few bosses of the game and must be able to brave the threats of the Mountains as well as their freezing temperatures.

Once players have reached the Mountains, though, they’re free to enter Frost Caves and their own risk.

Frost Caves can be less hard to spot than other caves as their entrance is made up of spiky rocks with massive icicles sticking out from the roof, and in general, they stick out from rock formations in the Mountains.

What enemies are in Frost Caves?

Frost Caves have a number of dangerous foes players must brave if they want to reach the end.

These include Ulve, Cultists, Stone Golems, and Bats (as well as falling Icicles for those that can’t control their swings)!

Most often you’ll find Cultists, Ulve, and Bats in Frost Caves. Stone Golems are a much more rare find, and will only be inside if you get a Frozen Lake in the back of the cave.

These enemies range in number from a couple in specific locations to entire lairs filled with foes. With that, you’ll need to watch your step and corners as you traverse Frost Caves. And to really be safe, sneak as best you can.

All Frost Caves Loot

With how much danger lies inside them, why should players enter the Frost Caves of Valheim? Thankfully, there’s some very valuable loot to gain.

Frost Caves offer different amounts of the following items: Chests, Crystals, Fenris Hair, Fenris Claw, Red Jute, Iron, Bronze, Coal, Silver Necklaces.

Some of these items can be found while others take destroying objects inside. These are certainly worth farming, but just be careful when getting the Red Jute, as enemies can be hiding behind the massive curtains!

Valheim Patch 0.207.20 (The Mountains Update)

Frost Caves first arrived in Valheim in The Mountains Update, patch 0.207.20.

Quality of Life

• Building marker is more subtle and indicates piece rotation
• Corpse run gives carry weight bonus to compensate for unequipped belt
• Crafting stackable items while having full inventory now possible if there are are available stack slots
• Fixed a bug where sometimes stackable items won’t be taken when having full inventory and pressing ‘Take All’ in a chest
• Chat can now be closed using esc, mouse or gamepad B

Gamepad Support

• Full controller support!
• Controller legend visible in pause menu and settings
• Controller text input when running in Steam big picture mode. Chat, characters, signs, pets etc can now be named using the controller.
• Controller mapping of all game features
• Context menus will now always show controller buttons when using controller
• Alternative controller glyph style option
• Skills window scrollable with gamepad
• Crafting can be cancelled if pressing the button again (like with mouse)
• Fixed some missing/misplaced gamepad tooltips

Steam Deck

• Steam Deck controller layout shows when playing on Steam Deck
• Loads default settings catered to the Steam Deck
