Marnie is one of the NPCs in Pelican Town in Stardew Valley. Although players can’t marry her, there’s nothing wrong about befriending the owner of Marnie’s Ranch. In fact, increasing her friendship or relationship level can yield rewards, including rare recipes. So, keep reading to learn the right (and wrong) gifts to present to Marnie to efficiently increase your relationship status with her.

Marnie: The Rancher

Remember, many NPCs thrive in Pelican Town, but the cornerstone of it all is Marnie. This particular NPC operates the local ranch, becoming the village’s primary source of livestock and supplies. With that, Marnie’s business is essential for any aspiring farmer, as contracting her services allows you to purchase items, such as Hay, Shears, and a Birdhouse. Alternatively, talk to Marnie to collect livestock for your farm, such as chickens for the coop or cows for the barn. Interacting with Marnie is a joy for most Stardew Valley players. Her appearance reflects her warm, nurturing demeanor. She wears a kind face, framed by soft, red hair, which allows visitors, customers or not, to feel at ease in her presence.

Preferred Gifts of Marnie in Stardew Valley

As with other Stardew Valley NPCs, players can gift Marnie twice per week. However, the exception is during her birthday in Fall 18, as you can present her with an additional item. Players can gauge whether Marnie loves, likes, or hates a particular gift by her reaction. So, take note of the following responses:

• Love: “This is an incredible gift! Thanks!!”
• Like: “Thank you!”
• Neutral: “Thank you! This looks nice.”
• Dislike: “Oh. I guess I'll take it.”
• Hate: “This is worthless. I don't understand you.”

Heart Events

Stardew Valley players can unlock Marnie’s Heart Events at friendship level three, indicated by the three hearts in the Social tab. These events often occur at any time, as long as the requirements are met.

Three-Heart Event I

The first of the two three-heart events involving Marnie requires the player to leave the farmhouse between 6 AM and 9:30 AM. She'll then ask you to fetch her favorite food: Cave Carrots. Bring one Cave Carrot to Marnie at her ranch on the same day and between 9 AM and 5 PM. A cutscene plays if you have the item in your inventory upon entering the establishment.

Three-Heart Event II

The second three-heart event only involves Marnie sending you the Pale Broth recipe in the mail. Simply receive the recipe from your mailbox to complete this instance.

Six-Heart Event

Marnie’s six-heart event will only occur if your friendship level with Mayor Lewis is also at six hearts. If so, a cutscene triggers when you enter Pelican Town on a sunny day between 7 PM and 11 PM. Doing so lets you in on a “little” secret between Marnie and the Mayor. Then, two on-screen choices appear:

• +50 Friendship with Mayor Lewis: Yes… by I’ll keep it a secret.
• -100 Friendship with Mayor Lewis: Yes… and I’m going to tell everyone.

Note that you can still improve your relationship between these two NPCs if you choose the bottom option. However, note that the reduction in friendship level means the hurdle to regain their trust will be tougher than normal.

Seven-Heart Event

The last heart event for Marnie occurs when you reach friendship level 7 with her. Like her second three-heart event, you’ll receive another recipe in the mail, and this time it’s for Rhubarb Pie. Again, receive the recipe from your mailbox to complete this instance. Note: It was possible to receive all recipes from Marnie during her three-heart event before Update 1.4.
