With the recent leaks of the Minecraft Movie, some interest in Minecraft Story Mode has been reignited. However, this interest also comes with the discovery that Minecraft Story Mode is not so easily played. So, today, we explore how to play Minecraft Story Mode in 2024.

How to Play Minecraft Story Mode in 2024

Minecraft Story Mode vanished from nearly every store after Telltale Games lost the licensing rights to Minecraft in 2018. As a result, playing Minecraft Story Mode’s two seasons today is rather tricky. Below, we have listed the remaining legal methods to experience the game:

Physical Copies

Nearly all physical copies of Minecraft Story Mode will work on their respective consoles without any issues. These options include PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and Windows. However, for PS3 and Xbox 360, the “Complete Adventure” copies are required.

Digital Download

Due to the licensing issues mentioned above, Minecraft Story mode is no longer available for digital purchase. The one exception to this is claimed to be purchasing a Steam Key through third parties, but the few that remain are hidden among a sea of pricy scams. We do not recommend pursuing this option.

YouTube

The last legal option would be watching someone play Minecraft Story Mode on YouTube. This takes away the ability to make in-game choices yourself, leaving the experience less than ideal, but it is better than nothing.

The Future of Story Mode

Future Minecraft Story Mode content is unlikely. After Telltale Games went bankrupt in 2018, they lost the licensing rights to Minecraft, resulting in the difficulty of obtaining the game today. The fact that this issue remains despite Telltale’s return suggests a new deal could not be made, or Mojang has no desire for Minecraft Story Mode to return.
