Unlike other games, blood in DayZ isn’t directly associated with the health or energy gauge. Instead, it’s a separate mechanic that helps determine a character’s physical abilities. What are Blood Types in DayZ Used For?

Blood type is the absence or presence of certain antigens, particularly A and B, on the surface of red blood cells. DayZ puts the real-world definition of blood types into the game and makes it a mechanic. In particular, each character in DayZ will have a random blood type during character creation. It also doesn’t transfer when a new character spawns and doesn’t carry over other created characters on separate hives. Ultimately, blood type in DayZ affects a character’s ability to donate or receive blood from transfusions. A character receiving blood with an incompatible type will lead to a fatal hemolytic reaction. In DayZ, you’ll know if this reaction occurs when the character receiving the blood loses it quickly over time until they become unconscious.

Identifying Your Blood Type in DayZ

Although hidden, DayZ distributes the different blood types to its character base using an algorithm. Below is a quick look at the different blood types and their distribution among DayZ characters:

• A+: 23%
• O-: 10%
• B+: 9%
• A-: 5%
• B-: 3%
• AB+: 2%
• AB-: 2%

Use a Blood Testing Kit to determine what blood type your character has. To do so, first open your inventory and place it in your hands. Next, hold the action button until the circle on the screen completes one revolution. Once complete, you’ll see the blood type in the blood drop icon at the lower right portion of the screen.

Donating Blood

Assuming your blood type is compatible with the receiver, you can draw blood from your character by equipping a Blood Bag. Then, hold the action button until the circle on the screen completes one revolution. Warning: You’ll lose a fair amount of blood after using a Blood Bag. Ensure your character is well-hydrated and has sufficient energy before initiating this operation. Next, combine an IV Start Kit with the recently used Blood Bag to create a Blood Bag IV Kit. Walk up to the receiver of your blood and place the Blood Bag IV Kit in your character’s hands. If done correctly, an on-screen option should appear, allowing you to use the Blood Bag IV Kit on the other character. Hold the action button again, and let the on-screen circle complete one revolution. Doing so will restore 500 Blood to the receiver instantly.
