Details on the next game drop have been shared, starting with a happy ghast who is simply sick of dry air. So, today, we explore all confirmed details on dried ghasts, ghastlings, and happy ghasts in our Minecraft happy ghast guide.

How to Obtain a Happy Ghast

Dried Ghasts

Dried Ghast Block To obtain a happy ghast, one must first find a dried ghast block in the nether, which generates exclusive around the bone block structures in soul sand valley biomes. They are one block in size, look like a frowning grey skull, and can be broken by hand. Once obtained, a dried ghast block can be placed as desired and remains a static block until it is submerged in water. From there, over twenty minutes’ time, the dried ghast block will change expressions from sad to neutral to happy until it finally transforms into a ghastling.

Ghastlings

Minecraft Ghastling Screenshot Ghastlings are the baby form of happy ghasts, and like most baby mobs, they don’t do all that much. Those looking after a ghastling can expect it to fly around curiously, examining the overworld and nearby players. Ghastlings are tempted by snowballs and can be fed them to increase the rate at which they grow into happy ghasts.

Happy ghasts are a peaceful variant of ghasts that are friendly to the player but not tameable, similar to farm animals. A happy ghast given free rein will wander about much like when it was a ghastling, following the player only when they are holding snowballs.

Ghast Harness

Ghast Harness Recipe Screenshot Riding a happy ghast requires a harness to be placed on their head. Harnesses are crafted using three leather, two glass blocks, and one wool block, with the color of the wool dictating the harness’s color.

Riding

Happy Ghast in Harness Screenshot Once a harness is placed on a happy ghast, up to four players can ride, with the first on top controlling the reigns. While nowhere near as fast elytra, happy ghasts serve instead as a survival alternative to creative flight, even allowing players to dismount in the sky and stand atop a happy ghast’s head as though it were a solid platform. Additionally, a happy ghast always remains completely still when at least one player is on its head.

Breeding

Minecraft Snowball Happy ghasts are tempted by snowballs, but whether they can be bred was not confirmed during  Minecraft Live 2025 or the Deep Dig after-show that followed.
