What is a Minecraft ARG?
发布于 ,作者
Nothing is more enticing than a spooky mystery, and recently quite a few Minecraft-related ones have gone viral. But are any of them actually real? Today, we answer that and more in “What is a Minecraft ARG?”
The acronym ARG stands for “Alternate Reality Game”. A form of entertainment that blends reality and fiction, often incorporating a broader mystery for fans to interact with and theorize on. Sometimes an ARG will be very hands-on and more on the puzzle side of things, where fans and entire communities can decode secrets and lore created by a brand or individual. The developers of Poppy’s Playtime often create extensive mysteries that take fans from the Discord to secret websites, videos, and even real-life locations, for example.
On the other end of the spectrum are the more entertainment-focused video ARGs that present themselves as real or found footage. The interaction aspect for these is typically fans joining together to piece together the overarching plot or mystery. For Minecraft specifically, most of the popular ARGs fall into this category.
Alternate reality games are works of fiction that depict themselves as real. This is rarely malicious, and more so to give the content a more natural, grounded feeling and that fun “what if” factor. No one believes the Poppy’s Playtime ARGs are real, for example, but the developers still go out of their way to present it as such for the immersion and fun of it all. The same goes for Wifie’s viral “Searching For A World That Doesn’t Exist,” which is presented entirely as if it were real but still states in the description that it is all a fictional ARG made for entertainment. At the end of the day, ARGs are exactly what the acronym represents: alternate reality games.
Mentioned briefly above, a viral example of a Minecraft ARG is Wifie’s “Searching For A World That Doesn’t Exist”. It presents itself as Wifie exploring a series of odd Minecraft uploads on a completely different YouTube channel where the uploader claims to have obtained a laptop from a storage locker with a strange Minecraft world on it. A premise that isn’t entirely unrealistic, but it only gets more eerie from there. Blending that fine line between reality and fiction, as Wifie’s masterfully does, is often what makes for an engaging and fun ARG. Hopefully Wifie has many more to come!
