In Minecraft, Freezing has the potential to be a key potion in PVP, so it doesn’t hurt to have some ready should there ever be a need! Today, we explain step by step how to make Freezing Potions and Arrows in Minecraft, as announced in
Minecraft Live September 2026!
Types of Freezing Potions & Arrows in Minecraft
- Freezing Potion (45 Seconds)
- Splash Freezing Potion (45 Seconds)
- Lingering Freezing Potion (11 Seconds)
- Arrow of Freezing (5 Seconds)
Freezing Potions are harmful potions for combat and
PVP that slow targets and deal damage to them over time. In its base form, which the wielder can only drink themselves, it sadly serves little purpose. However, once combined with gunpowder to become a splash potion, it turns into a deadly and versatile weapon that players can throw.
Those with dragon’s breath can also take the potion a step further and turn it into a Lingering Freezing Potion. This version of the potion, when thrown, creates a cloud for 30 seconds that applies freezing to anything inside it, or it can be crafted into a devastating Arrow of Freezing.
Freezing Potion Ingredients
- Bottle of Water
- Nether Wart
- Ice Ball
- Gunpowder
- Dragon’s Breath (For Lingering & Arrows)
A single Freezing Potion requires one glass bottle filled with water, one nether wart, one ice ball, and one gunpowder. Those taking it a step further to create
Lingering Potions of Freezing will also need a bottle of dragon’s breath. Then add arrows to turn them into an
Arrow of Freezing.
Glass bottles are crafted using three glass blocks on a crafting table, while nether wart can be found growing within nether fortresses. If a brewing stand is not yet owned, or more blaze powder is needed to power the one at home, Blazes also spawn within Nether fortresses, providing a great chance to grab their blaze rods as well. Blaze rods are used to craft brewing stands, while the powder that they break down into powers them.
Back in the Overworld, Ice Balls can be looted from Frozen Zombies if they spawn carrying them. Frozen Zombies spawn in snowy biomes and
Ice Caves. Finally, gunpowder can be obtained by slaying Creepers, which spawn just about anywhere at night. If only Splash Potions of Freezing are desired, no further ingredients are required.
Those attempting to craft the lingering version will also need to head to the End and fight the
Ender Dragon with some empty glass bottles in hand. When the dragon uses its breath attack to cover the ground in purple clouds, the clouds can be scooped up with glass bottles to obtain dragon’s breath.
How to Make Freezing Potions & Arrows in Minecraft
With all the ingredients in hand, up to three potions can be brewed at once following the steps below:
- Place up to three bottles of water inside the brewing stand.
- Add one nether wart to turn the bottles of water into Awkward Potions.
- Add one ice ball to turn the Awkward Potions into Freezing Potions.
- Add one gunpowder to turn the Freezing Potions into Splash Potions of Freezing.
- (Optional) Add one dragon’s breath to turn the Splash Potions of Freezing into Lingering Potions of Freezing.
With that, the brewing process is done! Those attempting to create
Arrows of Freezing need only place a Lingering Potion of Freezing in the center of a crafting table and surround it with eight arrows to complete the process.
