Since their initial addition to Minecraft in beta version 1.4, Wolves have been a faithful ally of players across the world. And now, as of Minecraft 1.20.5, our wolf pack will grow! Today, we explore the eight new Wolf variants in our Minecraft 1.21 Wolf Variants guide.

All Minecraft 1.21 Wolf Variants

Excluding spawn biome and default pack size, all Wolf variants share the same statistics. The choice of which to tame is entirely cosmetic. Below, we have listed each Wolf variant’s details alongside their real-world counterparts and some unique facts.

Pale Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Taiga
• Default Pack Size: 4
• Real World Counterpart: Gray Wolf
• Unique Notes: The original Wolf variant we know and love!

Woods Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Forest
• Default Pack Size: 4
• Real World Counterpart: Golden Jackel
• Unique Notes: The new most common Wolf variant in Minecraft.

Ashen Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Snowy Taiga
• Default Pack Size: 4
• Real World Counterpart: Northwestern Wolf
• Unique Notes: Northwestern Wolves are also known as the Mackenzie Valley Wolf, Alaskan Timber Wolf, and Canadian Timber Wolf.

Black Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Old Growth Pine Taiga
• Default Pack Size: 2 to 4
• Real World Counterpart: Black Wolf
• Unique Notes: Despite their color, Black Wolves are a variant of Gray Wolf and can also be called the Melanistic Gray Wolf.

Chestnut Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Old Growth Spruce Taiga
• Default Pack Size: 2 to 4
• Real World Counterpart: Crab Eating Fox
• Unique Notes: South American foxes in the genus Lycalopex are not closely related to true foxes.

Rusty Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Sparse Jungle
• Default Pack Size: 2 to 4
• Real World Counterpart: Dhole
• Unique Notes: Rusty Wolves, Spotted Wolves, and Striped Wolves all spawn in a biome not previously possible for wolves in Minecraft.

Spotted Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Savanna Plateau
• Default Pack Size: 4 to 8
• Real World Counterpart: African Wild Dog
• Unique Notes: The African Wild Dog is an endangered species native to sub-Saharan Africa.

Striped Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Wooded Badlands
• Default Pack Size: 4 to 8
• Real World Counterpart: Striped Hyena
• Unique Notes: Striped Hyenas are much less vocal than their relative, the Spotted Hyena, with vocalizations often being limited to a chattering laugh or howling.

Snowy Wolf

• Spawn Biome: Grove
• Default Pack Size: 1 (Lone Wolf)
• Real World Counterpart: Arctic Wolf
• Unique Notes: The only Minecraft Wolf variant listed as rare by Mojang.
