After the successful run of A Minecraft Movie, a sequel was quickly greenlit and will soon be available to fans in just over a year. So, today, we explore the highly anticipated Minecraft Movie sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared, alongside the A Minecraft Movie Squared release date, cast, and latest rumors that have appeared.

A Minecraft Movie Squared: Release Date

The A Minecraft Movie Squared release date is slated for July 23, 2027, in the United States. This information was initially released on the official Minecraft X account with simultaneous announcements across Minecraft’s other social media. Since then, no delays have been rumored or publicly shared, suggesting that the scheduled release remains on track. International release dates will, however, vary much like with A Minecraft Movie. Once made available, we will have those listed here. As for trailers, a behind-the-scenes look was shared at Minecraft Live TwitchCon 2026, introducing new cast members, but no official trailer has yet been released.

As of late May, all but Emma Myers and Sebastian Eugene Hansen have confirmed their return for A Minecraft Movie Squared. While the movie could proceed without Natalie and Henry, we can’t help but feel this would be unlikely and that their own return announcements will be soon. As for new cast members, Minecraft Live TwitchCon 2026 announced Kirsten Dunst as Alex and Matt Berry as an unknown Steve-like character that could potentially be Herobrine.

Plot

In the behind-the-scenes look offered at Minecraft Live TwitchCon 2026, Alex, who Steve met in the post-credit scene of A Minecraft Movie, was confirmed as a full-fledged character for the sequel, alongside Matt Berry as someone who is attempting to look like Steve. Many, including ourselves, have speculated this to be Herobrine, who could also act as the sequel’s antagonist. Alternatively, we could find ourselves in the Minecraft multiverse. Another Steve’s overworld with another Steve. The reason for this thought is that Minecraft, even in the official games, has never truly added Herobrine (despite patch notes jokingly saying otherwise), and there could be legal issues surrounding the rights to this third-party-created character. As for where it will all take place, we do have confirmation that the cast is returning to the overworld and that we will be seeing even more biomes and mobs. Sadly, none have yet been shown.

A Minecraft Movie Squared Build Contest

As shared during Minecraft Live TwitchCon 2026, fans have the very unique opportunity to leave their mark on A Minecraft Movie Squared by competing in the official Minecraft Build Challenge. The winner will have their build featured in the film and receive a cape, while the finalists will all receive a private screening of A Minecraft Movie Squared. Those entering must use the Build Challenge Map on Bedrock Edition, be 16+ years of age, and submit by June 8, 2026. The build must also be a structure or house within the 16x16x32 space provided by the map. Once complete, a single build can be submitted here. It must include a name, brief description, front-facing screenshot, and a 15 to 30 second YouTube video offering a full 360-degree view. Only one submission is permitted.
