Cats are an amazingly useful companion in Minecraft but taming them isn’t as easy as wolves. So, today, we explain step by step how to tame cats in Minecraft, including where to find them and the best uses they have at home.

All Cat Spawn Locations

Stray cats spawn naturally in two overworld locations: villages and swamp huts. We recommend that players searching for cats try their luck with finding villages rather than swamp huts. This is because villages will have more cats and a larger variety of them, while swamp huts only spawn black cats, which villages can have as well. Additionally, if the village is large enough and has at least four occupied beds, cats will respawn naturally. Note: Long time Minecraft players may recall tamed ocelots turning into cats. This was removed in Minecraft 1.14, and it is no longer possible to tame ocelots.

How to Tame Cats in Minecraft

Cats are not so easily swayed to the player’s side like most mobs in Minecraft. Those attempting to tame them will need to crouch with a raw cod or raw salmon in hand and wait as the cat slowly approaches. Only then will a cat’s trust be earned, allowing you to feed them, which has the chance of permanently taming them. Once tamed, cats can be bred or healed using raw cod or raw salmon.

Benefits of Cat Taming

At first glance, cats may seem like nothing more than furry friends to keep at home. However, they have some uses that are lesser known. Creepers and phantoms fear cats and will flee when they are around. Additionally, when sleeping with cats nearby, they may give you a gift upon waking up, which can be a rabbit’s foot, rabbit hide, string, rotten flesh, feather, raw chicken, or phantom membrane.
