As silly as that may sound, it is truly no easy feat! Thankfully, there are ways to make the grind just a little bit easier. Today, we explain step by step how to get the blue axolotl in Minecraft.

The Legendary Blue Axolotl

Players exploring the pools of lush caverns can find axolotls in an array of colors, including pink, brown, gold, and cyan, but never ever blue. This is because blue axolotls can not spawn naturally. Instead, they have a 1 in 1200 chance of being born when two axolotls of any other color are bred. To be precise, that is a jaw dropping 0.083% each time two axolotls are fed tropical fish!

How to Get the Blue Axolotl in Minecraft

Time. No matter how efficient, getting a blue axolotl is a test of patience that, for most, will take hours upon hours. However, there are ways to fight those odds and make the grind a little shorter by following the few short steps below.

1: Find Two Axolotls

• Required Items: Bucket of Water x2

Before breeding can begin, two axolotl parents of any color must be found. Axolotls spawn exclusively within lush cave biomes, which are thankfully marked on the surface by the presence of an azalea tree. The kind with green leaves and pink flowers. Once one has been found, simply dig down to get inside the lush cavern. Axolotls will be swimming within the pools of water, and right-clicking them with a bucket of water places the axolotl inside to carry home.

2: Gather Buckets of Tropical Fish

Two buckets of tropical fish are required for each breeding attempt, making 2400 the average number needed for a single blue axolotl. Those who wish to prepare that number ahead of time have a few options:

• Bucket Fishing: Continuously jumping into warm oceans to gather tropical fish in buckets. (They do not stack!)

3: Create Breeding Pool One

With both the axolotls and fish in hand, it is now time to set up the first (of many) breeding pools. They do not need to be fancy. A hole that is two blocks wide, three blocks long, and two blocks deep filled with water works perfectly.

4: First Axolotl Breeding

Place the two axolotls gathered earlier inside the breeding pool and feed them both a bucket of tropical fish. Some lucky few lottery winners out there will already have their blue axolotl. Congrats! As for the rest of us mere mortals, the grind begins here. Five minutes must pass before the axolotls can be bred again.

5: Create Another Breeding Pool

While waiting for the breeding cooldown, create another breeding pool and move the baby axolotl over to it. Then, once a second baby has been bred, move that one over there too. When they have grown up, breed them every five minutes as well.

6: Repeat Step 5

The goal from this point is to ensure no baby goes to waste. Continue making breeding pools for each new pair and breeding them on the five-minute mark. Before you know it, you will have one hundred pools producing axolotls every five minutes, and eventually, one will be blue.
