Foxes are one of the most adorable animals players can find, but is it possible to tame them like cats and wolves? Today, we answer that and more in “How to Tame a Fox in Minecraft.”

Fox Spawn Locations

Foxes spawn naturally in groves, taiga, snowy taiga, old growth pine taiga, and old growth spruce taiga biomes in groups of two to four, with each having a 5% chance to be spawned as a baby. Foxes that spawn in groves and snowy taiga will additionally have a unique white coat rather than its standard red.

How to Tame a Fox in Minecraft

Foxes can not be tamed in Minecraft, but any created through breeding will trust the player. To breed a fox, at least two glow berries or sweet berries are required alongside two captured foxes. Leads, plenty of berries to entice the foxes, and enclosures of at least three blocks high will also help in this endeavor. Once two foxes have been fed a sweet berry or glow berry, they will produce a kit matching the parent’s color that trusts the player. With that, the baby fox has been successfully “tamed,” or at least as close as players can get to it.

Benefits of Earning a Fox's Trust

Foxes that trust the player will not attempt to flee when approached and do all they can to help defend those they trust when they are attacked. But, unlike wolves, foxes will not follow the player, nor can they be made to sit to keep them in place. Instead, foxes that trust the player retain all standard fox behaviors outside of the specific circumstances mentioned prior. This sadly leaves foxes with few mechanical benefits, even when they trust the player. But, at the very least, there is no denying they are adorable to have around. Just ensure any chicken pens are enclosed or have walls that are three blocks tall, as even trusting foxes will still jump over anything less to eat what’s inside.
