A new weapon has joined the fray, and this one has the potential to change how PVP is played! So, today, we take an early look at the new Minecraft spears, how their two attacks function, and the recipe they all share in our Minecraft spear guide.

All Minecraft Spears

Unlike the trident and mace, the spear has joined the sword and axe with variants for all resource tiers. This makes it a weapon that can be used all the way from the late game to the early game, where it is especially viable due to its low resource cost.

Minecraft Spear Attacks

Rather than spamming attacks like with the sword, the spear thrives on slower but more damaging thrusts with extended reach in the form of an ability called “Jab.” Alternatively, the spear has a second attack known as charge, with its own unique mechanics and functions, which we detail below.

Jab

• Netherite Damage: 2.5 Hearts
• Netherite Damage W/ S5: 4 hearts
• Netheite Cooldown: 1.15 Seconds

The first of the spear’s two attacks is called jab and acts as a single stabbing attack with an extended reach on a short cooldown. It is important to note this cooldown is not the optional charge time seen in Java Edition combat but rather an unavoidable cooldown displayed in the hot bar upon its use. Jab can not hit targets that are too close.

Charge

• Charge State 1: Damage, Knockback, & Dismount
• Charge State 2: Damage & Knockback

Charge is a temporary stance that allows players to charge into an enemy and deal damage alongside other effects, determined by the state charge is in. Each of these three charge states is visually indicated by how the spear is being held, with state one being perfectly pointed, state two shaking, and state three slumped downward. The developers described it as the weight of the spear gradually taking its toll. Additionally, the damage of charge is increased further based on your speed and your opponent’s speed, making the spear extremely lethal if you or your opponent is going fast. Higher-tier spears increase the length of charge’s state one while also reducing the time it takes for it to recover.

Spears share all enchantments with swords, minus sweeping edge, which remained exclusive. However, to make up for that fact, spears have an exclusive enchantment of their own called lunge. A Minecraft spear enchanted with lunge allows the wielder to launch themselves horizontally by using the jab attack at the cost of extra hunger. The distance traveled is increased with each level of lunge up to three. Being airborne and looking in the direction of the attack increases the distance traveled as well. Previously, lunge could not be on the same spear as mending but this is no longer the case.
