In Windrose, there's more than one way to be a pirate. Yes, you ought to make sure you have a cutlass, plenty of gunpowder, and a shovel. However, the type of ships you captain in Windrose is entirely up to you. Maybe you want to be faster for evasive exploration, or stronger for heavy cannon fights. Whatever ship type you're in the market for in Windrose, we've got all the info you need below deck.

Windrose Pirate and Their Ship screenshot Due to Windrose being in Early Access, there are currently three different ships in Windrose. However, the developers have confirmed that more ship types will arrive during the Early Access period. When you start the game, you'll have a pathetic little rowboat. Luckily, the tutorial leads you to a few main quests to get you your first real ship. If you're looking for more ships, you'll have to unlock their designs first. These can be found while you're exploring islands, looting treasures, and trading with merchants at Tortuga. When you have a ship recipe you want to craft, you'll need to create a Wharf to build your ship. Luckily, ships in Windrose are like other building pieces. Assemble the ingredients listed in the recipe, head to the Wharf, and voila! You'll have a whole new ship added to your fleet. You can also use the Wharf to manage all of the ships in your possession.

Ketch

Windrose Ketch screenshot This is the ship that you'll start with. Of course, you'll have to finish the tutorial and the quest I Need A Bigger Boat first. The Ketch isn't the flashiest, fastest, or fiercest ship you'll find. But it's a trusty starting point to get you out and on the open water. As part of the quest, you won't actually build the Ketch from scratch. Instead, you'll repair a marooned ship that will become your Ketch. Here are all of the materials you need to get it seaworthy once more:
  • Wood: 100
  • Nails: 20
  • Coarse Fabric: 20
  • Ropes: 10
For your trouble, you'll be rewarded with the Ketch and immediately sent on to the next part of the quest to recruit a loyal crew. Again, the Ketch isn't the best ship in the game, but it has enough to get you started, with room for eight cannons and some ship storage.

Brig

Windrose Brig Ship Recipe image If you're looking for a step up from the Ketch, the Brig is your answer. As its in-game description says, the Brig is a versatile ship. Whether you're hoping to simply travel from island to island or blast rival ships from afar, the Brig can deal and take plenty of punishment. It has room for 14 cannons and considerably more storage than a Ketch. If you're buying this recipe from a merchant, it'll cost you 1000 Piastre. Once you find the recipe for a Brig, here's everything you'll need to craft one:
  • Nails: 200
  • Wooden Plank: 200
  • Coarse Fabric: 120
  • Copper Ingot: 80
  • Timber: 40
  • Linen Fabric: 40
  • Rope: 40
  • Shipwright's Tools: 30

Frigate

Windrose Frigate Ship Recipe image In Windrose, the Frigate is currently the master of the sea. This colossal vessel has room for a whopping 36 cannons. It's bigger and meaner than all other ships on the waters. Like the Brig, it's well-suited to any job you might have in mind. Unlike the Brig, it's much better at getting those jobs done. Find the recipe with a merchant, and you'll have to fork over a whopping 3000 Piastre. Here's everything you'll need to craft a Frigate once you've got the recipe:
  • Wooden Planks: 320
  • Nails: 300
  • Linen Fabric: 240
  • Timber: 160
  • Foothills Iron Ingot: 120
  • Tarred Planks: 80
  • Tarred Fabric: 80
  • Rope: 80
  • Shipwright's Tools: 50

Ship Faction Variants

Finally, keep your eyes peeled for ship variants. At the moment, there are two different variants available for ships at a higher level than your starting ship: Brethren & Blackbeard. Each one of these variants belongs to a different in-game faction. If you build a Blackbeard Frigate, for example, you'll have a Frigate with some altered stats in its performance. Blackbeard Brigs and Frigates are designed for surprise attacks and raids. They can hold higher-caliber cannons, and they're very fast. However, they have less cargo space and much less hull durability. Meanwhile, Brethren Brigs and Frigates the tanks of the sea. They've got incredibly strong hulls and loads of room for plunder in their storage. As one might guess, however, they're considerably slower.
