Pigs have been a part of Minecraft since Java Edition Classic, so it can come as quite a surprise that they have remained relatively untouched for over a decade. However, as of 2025, that is about to change! Today, we explore all Minecraft pig variants, including the “Failed Pig” that led to the creation of the creeper.

All Minecraft Pig Variants (2025)

Cold Pig

Cold pigs are covered by a crème-colored fur and spawn in old-growth pine taiga, old-growth spruce taiga, taiga, snowy taiga, windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills, and windswept forest biomes. While it is not confirmed, cold pigs are likely inspired by the Hungarian pig breed Mangalica, or sheep pig, which is covered by a natural wooly coat.

Warm Pig

Warm pigs are covered by a rust-brown-colored fur and spawn in savanna, savanna plateau, windswept savanna, jungle, sparse jungle, bamboo jungle, eroded badlands, wooded badlands, and badlands biomes. While it is not confirmed, warm pigs are likely inspired by wild pigs, or Eurasian Boars, which typically have light brown coats and small tusks.

Temperate Pig

Temperate pigs are the classic Minecraft pig with peach-colored skin. As of Minecraft Snapshot 25w02a, they spawn in forest, flower forest, birch forest, old-growth birch forest, dark forest, and swamp biomes. Temperate pigs are likely inspired by the domestic big breed White Pig or the American Yorkshire that derives from it, which can appear peach due to their extremely sparse and light coat of hair.

Failed Pig

The final pig variant is none other than the “Failed Pig.” While Notch was creating the pig model for Minecraft, a bug resulted in the pig model taking the form that we now know as creeper’s. Finding it creepy, Notch shared, “It looks creepier when animated ... haha, I’ll keep it for a creepy creature. =D”. Little did anyone expect that it would lead to Minecraft’s most iconic monster.
