This subterranean tower has 17 floors, with zombies lurking in every corner, making it one of the most unique POIs in the game!

As mentioned earlier, travel west of Rosewood and follow a long dirt road to reach the secret military research facility in Project Zomboid. The in-game map doesn’t do a good job at making players see this location, allowing it to double down on its hidden profile. Instead, we'll provide step-by-step instructions for getting there. So first, fill up your vehicle with gas and head west from Rosewood. While on the road, turn onto the southern road that leads into the forest. Continue that path until you eventually reach heavily wooded terrain. Eventually, you’ll see a structure in a compound, indicating that you’ve arrived at your destination.

What to Expect at the Secret Military Research Facility

Make no mistake, as the secret military research facility in Project Zomboid isn’t for newcomers. Only travel to and attempt this location if you’re in the game’s late stages. Once in the compound, but still above ground, you’ll encounter structures like abandoned checkpoints, security buildings, and other military infrastructure. Below ground, however, the facility’s scale increases significantly. Here, you’ll find different areas, sections, and sub-facilities, including the following:

The Stairwell is Your Entrance and Exit

Before descending underground, eliminate as many zombies as possible on the surface. The last thing you’d want is for the undead to block your exit, which is also the facility’s only practical entrance. If you’re in a Project Zomboid server with allies, consider having a few people clearing zombies above-ground. The communications building and the helipad are ideal vantage points for this cause.

Defend Floor 13

Floor 13 of Project Zomboid’s secret military base is its first underground level. This floor can also serve as your temporary base, moving forward. Here, you’ll find resting areas, storage units, and security rooms. You or one of your allies should stay on this floor to defend it from straggling zombies. Then, those in your party who will continue moving forward should clear Floor 13’s main corridor first. Avoid rushing into side rooms immediately, as doing so will most likely attract more of the undead. Once cleared, enter the small rooms for the extra loot, or let the person guarding the area handle it.

Also known as the barracks, this level can be deceptively dangerous. This floor has two staircases that can allow zombies to flank your team unexpectedly. Again, move slowly, and clear one wing at a time. If a large undead horde appears, retreat to Floor 13’s defensive chokepoint. Request help from the person guarding this area, if needed. It’s ideal to clear Floor 14 first before moving further underground.

Use Crowd Control Strategies in Floor 15

Floor 15 of the secret military research facility generally has the highest concentration of zombies. This area, known for its cafeteria, meeting rooms, and recreational facilities, features large open spaces where hordes can gather. Although high-powered firearms can help eliminate zombie threats, guns usually take them out one by one. Instead, use throwables, like grenades and Molotovs. A fairly common strategy is to intentionally attract the massive horde so the zombies clump together. Then, throw Molotov cocktails on the bunched-up undead so the fire spreads far and fast.

Restock on Medical Supplies on Floor 16

The research floor of the secret military research facility has laboratories and medical sections. Here, stock up on any restorative items that you might find. Also, don’t rush to the armory. Doing so is a death sentence, as the path leading to that location has zombies emerging from multiple directions.

Arguably, the loot in the secret military research facility is mediocre at best. This dungeon is a testing ground for zombie apocalypse survivors who are quite far into the endgame. Reaching the final floor of this military base is no different, as you’ll most likely find items here like tools and other resources commonly found in towns above ground.
