Attempting to transport villagers has always been a pain, but as of Minecraft 1.21, there is no longer a need to struggle in vain! Today, we explain step by step how to transport villagers in Minecraft 1.21+ using a method faster than any other in the game.

How to Transport Villagers in Minecraft 1.21+

Step 1: Find a Dried Ghast

Thankfully, they are not very hard to obtain, but it will require going to the nether. Once there, head to a Soul Sand Valley biome and look around the large bone structures for a small one-block-in-size dried ghast. When found, it can be broken by hand and brought back to the overworld, where the next step begins.

Step 2: Raise a Happy Ghast

Eventually, the dried ghast block will become a ghastling and then a happy ghast a couple more days after that. While it grows up, we recommend using the extra time to craft some leads. They will be essential in a later step and are also useful for keeping your growing happy ghast from flying off. Leads are crafted using five string on a crafting table. Start by placing one string on the top row’s left-most slot, followed by one string on the top row’s middle slot. Next, place one string in the left-most slot of the middle row, followed by a second string right in the middle of the crafting table. Finally, place one string in the right-most corner of the bottom row. This process should result in two leads, both of which we recommend keeping in hand.

Step 3: Craft a Harness & Boat

Harnesses are crafted on a crafting table using three leather across the top-most row, a glass block on either side of the middle row, and one wool block directly in the center. With that, a harness has been crafted! All that remains is placing it on your happy ghast. As for the boat, it will be required in a little bit, but it is better to have it ready now. A boat can be crafted by placing three wooden planks of the same kind along the bottom row of a crafting table and then one wooden plank on the left and right sides of the middle row. The boat should now be good to go.

Step 4: Find a Village

With the items above ready and in hand, the next step is finding a village. They can generate in plains, savanna, taiga, meadows, snowy plains, and desert biomes. We recommend using your happy ghast to fly around and look for one, as the happy ghast will also be required for the last step anyway.

Step 5: Place the Boat Beneath a Villager or Two

Minecraft Villagers in Boat Screenshot Once a village has been found, hop off your happy ghast and keep it close with a lead. From there, take your boat and place it beneath a villager’s feet. This should result in the villager getting trapped inside until the upcoming journey is complete. Up to two villagers can fit in a boat, so try to fill both seats by pushing a second villager inside.

Step 6: Attach the Boat to the Happy Ghast

Minecraft Happy Ghast Carrying Villagers in Boat Screenshot As of Minecraft 1.21, players can attach boats to happy ghasts with leads, including those with villagers inside! Simply right-click the boat with the lead and then shift-right-click the happy ghast. If it has worked, four tethers will be hanging from the happy ghast attached to each corner of the boat. Once confirmed to be connected, hop on your happy ghast and simply begin flying back to base. Your villagers will be safely carried in the boat beneath to their new forever home.
